HAVEN
BROOKLYN, NY
DAY 1
1 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT. NIGHT 1
June, Penny, Tracy and Maria are in a kitchen preparing
hord'oeuvres and drinks.
PENNY
They're so excited. They all look
like little kids.
JUNE
Thomas won't stop talking about
this commercial.
PENNY
This could be big for all of you.
Commercials, then movies, you're
gonna be at award shows in no time.
JUNE
Yeah, I just like seeing them doing
well. But, rich wouldn't be
terrible.
TRACEY
What's it for? Sid hasn't said
anything about it.
JUNE
You know that clothing line,
Brooklyn's Finest?
TRACEY
Not really?
PENNY
I have a pair of jeans from them.
They make my ass look great.
TRACEY
They did a commercial for women's
jeans?
JUNE
Not really it's more like COUTURE
DE WHORE.
MARIA
Really?
JUNE
Oh. I guess it was a secret.
TRACEY
Secret my ass. Sid was hiding it
until we were in public so I
couldn't say anything. Maria, did
Bill tell you?
MARIA
No. I didn't know what it was
either.
JUNE
So I guess you didn't know they
were topless huh?
She giggles.
TRACEY
Topless? Oh no. This doesn't get
you angry.
JUNE
Oh Tracey there's nothing to worry
about.
2 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT LIVINGROOM 2
The girls laugh and follow Tracey to the living room.
THOMAS
Hey, foods here.
TRACEY
You people get no food.
THOMAS
What?
TRACEY
Why didn't you tell me you were
shooting hip hop hoes?
MARIA
Yeah.
SID
You didn't ask me if we were
shooting hip hop hoes.
BILL
I didn't shoot anything. I made
music for Hip hop hoes.
The boys start laughing.
THOMAS
We didn't shoot hoes. We shot
models and actresses.
JUNE
Hoes.
THOMAS
Yeah, OK, hoes. Feed us now please.
BILL
I though the hoes were a good idea.
MARIA
Really? You thought that.
THOMAS
Just eat man, just eat.
PENNY
I bet they were your idea.
BRADLEY
That's right, I wanted the hoes and
am proud of the hoes.
THOMAS
Hey wait it's about to come on.
The TV screen starts showing women's asses in low cut jeans,
shaking from left to right. Tracey looks over at Sid who is
smirking and giggling. Suddenly the lights go out.
BRADLEY
What the fuck?
THOMAS
Shit, let me get to the breaker.
JUNE
Be careful for the...
Thomas trips over the chair.
JUNE (CONT'D)
Chair.
Thomas goes into the breaker box and flicks the switches.
THOMAS
It's not working.
BRADLEY
Go help him.
SID
What am I going to do? Flick it
back and forth!
Maria looks out the window.
MARIA
I think it's the whole block.
PENNY
Oh shit. Even the street lights are
out.
TRACEY
It's getting hot in here.
THOMAS
You're right. Let's take the food
and drinks and go upstairs.
SID
I want to see the commercial. It
might come back on.
BRADLEY
We're not seeing the commercial.
SID
I should have watched it at home.
BRADLEY
Stop your bitching.
PENNY
Come on the roof will be fun.
They gather the food and go upstairs to the roof.
3 EXT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT ROOF NIGHT 3
The group goes up to the roof and are shocked.
THOMAS
Holy shit. The whole city is out.
PENNY
There aren't any lights on at all.
That's eerie.
SID
Something's not right. We're not
all on the same electrical grid.
When the lights went out during the
black out, there were some lights
still on.
BRADLEY
Yo, You're right. That's weird.
Suddenly a ball of fire lights up the sky. Followed by
another and another.
BILL
Oh my god!
SID
What was that?
BILL
There's more! Look!
One hits the ground.
BRADLEY
Dude! That one hit!
THOMAS
We got to go downstairs.
JUNE
Look more over there!
PENNY
Jesus Christ.
Hundreds of fireballs are shooting across the sky, hitting
the ground and exploding. Burning fragments fly across
neighborhoods.
THOMAS
Hurry, downstairs now!
4 INT. STAIRWELL NIGHT 4
The group runs down the stairwells. They can hear expositions
going off outside. The building is shaking.
SID
That one was close!
MARIA
What's happening!
BILL
I don't know honey. We got to get
to the baby.
THOMAS
Hurry get down to the Lobby! Bill
get the baby.
BILL
I'm going!
The explosions are rocking the building.
5 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT 5
Bill runs into the bedroom to finds their baby daughter
Stephanie sleeping.
BILL
Oh thank God.
MARIA
She's OK?
BILL
Yah, let's go.
Another explosion rocks the building.
They pick her up and return to the lobby where everyone is
standing in front of the door looking out. Other people from
the building are downstairs.
THOMAS
What is going on?
JUNE
I don't know.
PENNY
How's the baby?
BILL
She's fine.
PENNY
Where's Bradley.
SID
He left.
BILL
Fuck.
DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR
What the fuck is happening! What is
exploding?
THOMAS
It looks like a meteor shower.
DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR
A meteor shower?
THOMAS
There are balls of fire shooting
across the sky and exploding.
DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR
Sounds like a meteor shower. Should
we stay here?
THOMAS
Better than outside.
6 EXT. BROOKLYN STREETS NIGHT 6
Bradley is driving through fires and panicked people on the
street.
BRADLEY
Get out the fucking way! Get back
in your house ya animal!
A mob of people are stopping a van trying to get away.
Bradley sees this and hits reverse.
BRADLEY (CONT'D)
Oh my god!
He drives on to sidewalks and cuts through gas stations to
get to his mothers house.
7 EXT. BRADLEY'S MOTHER'S HOUSE 7
Bradley pulls up on the side walk and runs inside. He turns
back and puts the club on the car.
8 INT. BRADLEY'S MOTHER'S HOUSE 8
When he walks in he sees his mother Judy standing over a
sterno, making French Toast and listening to music on a
battery operated radio.
BRADLEY
What the fuck are you doing?
JUDY
Making some French toast. You want?
Bradley stops takes a moment then rushes into the bedroom. He
packs up his mother's things and his things and grabs as much
food as he can carry.
JUDY (CONT'D)
What are you doing?
BRADLEY
Ma! The world is ending! They're
burning balls of fire falling from
the fucking sky!
JUDY
Oh, I thought the power just went
out.
BRADLEY
What did you think the explosions
were?
JUDY
Fireworks?
BRADLEY
Come on.
JUDY
Where are we going?
9 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT NIGHT 9
The group and the building members are still in the lobby.
Bradley's car pulls up to the curb wildly. He comes out with
Judy and a box of supplies.
JUDY
Hi boys!
SID
Hello.
THOMAS
Hi, Judy. Welcome to the end of the
world.
TRACEY
Don't say that Tom.
JUNE
Oh stop it. I grew up in World War
II. We had to deal with this kind
of thing all the time.
BRADLEY
Ma, there weren't balls of fire
falling from the sky, over
Brooklyn, in World War II.
JUNE
I think they stopped falling.
BRADLEY
I didn't see any on the way back.
JUNE
What was it?
BRADLEY
I don't know.
PENNY
I can't believe you left alone. Are
you OK?
BRADLEY
Yeah I'm fine.
JUDY
Who is this young lady?
BRADLEY
Ma, this is Penny, June's friend.
JUDY
Hi, nice to meet you.
PENNY
Nice to meet you too.
Judy looks over at Bradley.
JUDY
She's a nice girl. Why haven't I
met her?
BRADLEY
Ma, are you kidding me? The world
is ending outside.
JUDY
Well, I'd rather the world not end
without having a grandchild.
THOMAS
Why don't we go back to the roof
see if we can see anything.
SID
Yeah, we should try to find out
something. Do you guys have a
battery operated radio?
THOMAS
Do we? I don't know. You should ask
June.
JUNE
Yes we do. I'll go get it and some
flashlights and meet you upstairs.
PENNY
I'll help you. Judy, let me take
your bags.
JUDY
Oh she is so sweet. Thank you
sweetie.
They go upstairs.
PENNY
Go ahead up, we'll take care of
these.
JUDY
She's a keeper.
BRADLEY
Thanks Ma.
As the group opens the door they see that the sky is ablaze.
Fires are engulfing the majority of the skyline. Sirens are
heard everywhere. The Manhattan skyline can now be seen
glowing from the amount of quickly spreading fires. The group
is in shock. Penny and June come upstairs to see the
silhouette of their friends staring at the world on fire.
JUNE
Oh my god.
JUDY
This is it. This is the end of the
world.
JUNE
I'm scared.
THOMAS
Me too.
BRADLEY
Do you think the fireballs will be
starting again?
MARIA
I hope not.
SID
How was it out there?
BRADLEY
The streets are a mess with fires.
It's terrible.
THOMAS
You guys should stay here tonight.
SID
You think?
TRACEY
How are we all going to stay here?
SID
We'll figure it out.
JUNE
Well, we got drinks and food.
BRADLEY
I just picked up all the weed I had
in my house.
SID
Yeah, let's roll a blunt and see if
we can get anything on the radio.
THOMAS
Good idea.
BILL
You think the emergency broadcast
system is running?
Judy turns on the radio to hear nothing.
TRACEY
I guess not.
JUDY
I brought a tape.
They listen to Latin music while they watch the city burn.
DAY 2
10 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT DAY 10
People are sleeping on all the couches and floors. Thomas
wakes up and tries to make breakfast. The gas is off. Thomas
goes into a closet and pulls out two hibachis and a bag of
coal. He makes breakfast. Slowly the room wakes up. Penny
comes into the kitchen.
PENNY
Good morning.
THOMAS
Hey, How'd you sleep?
PENNY
OK, I guess.
THOMAS
There's no electricity yet.
PENNY
Yeah I know. I tried to watch the
TV.
JUNE
What's burning in here. It smells
like a barbecue.
PENNY
Hey sweetie.
THOMAS
Hey honey. Want some breakfast.
JUNE
No, not yet. Too early.
PENNY
I'll go see if anyone is hungry.
From the other room we hear Bradley before Penny leaves.
BRADLEY
I am.
SID
Me too.
PENNY
I guess those two are hungry.
They bring the food into the living room.
MARIA
Oh that's so nice. Thank you
Thomas.
THOMAS
No problem.
TRACEY
Has anyone heard anything about
anything yet?
THOMAS
Nothing yet.
JUNE
Let's try the radio again.
BILL
Someone has to know something.
They turn on the radio and catch a signal. A radio reporter
is speaking.
SIERRA TAYLOR
I repeat the President is asking
for all residents of major cities
not to travel the highways. Use is
restricted to rescue workers and
official vehicles. The satellites
that fell are highly radioactive
and should be avoided. Civilians
are to remain in their homes. Do
not try to travel. I repeat do not
try to travel. National guardsmen
are blocking the roadways and a
city wide curfew will be enforced
after seven PM. Stay tuned for
broadcasts throughout the day. This
is Sierra Taylor signing out.
THOMAS
I wonder how long this is going to
last.
SID
We should probably get ready to go.
BRADLEY
Go where? For all you know Bay
Ridge doesn't exist anymore.
SID
Well you know I'd like to find out.
MARIA
The woman said we should stay
inside.
JUNE
Yeah I think we should just wait it
out.
BRADLEY
Really man it's bad out there.
SID
What are we gonna do just camp out
here?
JUNE
Well, you're more than welcomed.
SID
I know but it's frustrating.
JUNE
I understand. If you want to go
check things out you can. I'd just
as soon stay here and wait for more
word.
BILL
What do you think started it all?
PENNY
It was probably something stupid
like a sun spot or something.
TRACEY
I could believe it was a hacker.
Programed all of the satellites to
fall.
PENNY
I could believe that but can you
aim a satellite not to hit your
country.
THOMAS
Oh yeah, I saw it on Discovery.
They totally aim the trajectory of
a satellite they want to down.
SID
That would have to be some hacker.
I mean to get all the satellites at
once.
PENNY
And hack into the security systems
of multiple countries?
BRADLEY
Impossible.
SID
I think Penny was more right with
the sun spots. It would have to be
something that could wipe them all
out at once.
BILL
What if it was something like
aliens.
BRADLEY
It wasn't aliens.
BILL
How do you know? How many times has
a person been able to drop multiple
satellites from orbit? I think this
could be an alien invasion.
THOMAS
Where are the ships...or aliens?
BILL
They are waiting for us to kill
each other. Why get your hands
dirty when we will do it ourselves
soon enough.
THOMAS
Don't be stupid.
BILL
Yeah, like a twelve year old hacker
terrorists is that much more
believable.
JUNE
Whatever it was really took us out.
What we should do is stay here
until the lights are on or the
radio says there is order outside.
JUDY
We are all safer together anyway.
THOMAS
We have to eat everything that is
perishable today. We can have a end
of the world dinner.
JUNE
That would be cute.
TRACEY
Actually that sounds fun.
THOMAS
Oh, big problem. The water in the
pipes ran out.
TRACEY
Oh. How are we going to use the
bathroom.
JUNE
Oh.
TRACEY
Oh.
BRADLEY
Oh. That's not going to work.
THOMAS
I guess we can go outside?
SID
We'll go in groups in the back.
BILL
Wow, this is going to suck.
TRACEY
Well I got to go to the bathroom.
SID
OK, well I'll go with you.
THOMAS
Let me know when you two are done
because I got to go. Too many
veggie-burgers last night.
SID
Listen out for us.
BRADLEY
We got ya.
Sid and Tracey leave the apartment then come back in.
SID
Got any toilet paper?
JUNE
I'll be right with you.
She goes to get the paper and gives it to Sid.
11 EXT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT DAY 11
Sid and Tracey go out the door and look around. The air is
thick with ash and the sky is burnt orange.
TRACEY
It's snowing.
SID
I think it's ash.
TRACEY
No.
SID
That doesn't look good. Hurry up
OK.
TRACEY
I'm not thinking about sight
seeing.
From behind Sid and down the block, a group of dogs walk out
from the train tracks. Sid and Tracey go around the building
through an alley.
Tracey is squatting and peeing.
TRACEY (CONT'D)
Keep watching.
SID
I am watching.
TRACEY
Not me.
SID
Oh. Sorry.
Sid turns around to come face to face with the hungry dogs.
SID (CONT'D)
Oh shit.
TRACEY
Help!
12 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT DAY 12
Bradley sticks his head out the window ready to laugh at
Tracey.
BRADLEY
Oh shit! They need help!
The boys, Penny and Judy run down the stairs and around the
corner. They see Sid fending off the dogs who are circling
with a stick.
JUDY
What are we gonna do?
BRADLEY
Ma! Go back inside.
THOMAS
Penny you too.
JUDY
And leave you guys all alone?
From in the apartment June calls to the dogs.
JUNE
Here doggies, doggies, doggies!
She tossed a pack of burgers across the lawn from Tracey and
Sid.
SID
My burgers!
JUNE
Run!
Bill, Bradley, Sid, Thomas, Penny, Tracey and Judy start to
back into the apartment building. The dogs fight over the
food and turn back to the fleeing group. They run through the
alley knocking down garbage cans and get up to the door.
JUDY
Holy shit get the keys!
BRADLEY
I told you to go into the house!
PENNY
Thomas open the door!
THOMAS
I'm trying.
He opens the door and they go in. The group runs upstairs and
closes the door.
PENNY
Oh my god. No more shitting
outside.
TRACEY
Agreed. So ah...
JUNE
Use the toilet and I guess when we
can't anymore we'll use the tub.
TRACEY
Tub?
THOMAS
Tub or outside again.
Tracey goes to the bathroom.
MARIA
How long do you think it will take
to get the fires under control?
SID
The city is going to burn. If they
couldn't put out the trade center
they can't put out the whole city.
BILL
How many satellites do you think
fell?
PENNY
I heard once that there are
something like twenty thousand
satellites around the planet. If
they all dropped...
BRADLEY
It would be horrible... in a lot of
places.
PENNY
I saw at least five hit Manhattan
when we were on the roof.
SID
I saw two hit around Canarsie or
Mill basin.
BRADLEY
Bensonhurst was burning when I
picked Ma up and the tracks over
McDonald avenue were burning.
PENNY
They're where hundreds in the sky.
They must have fell.
BRADLEY
We really may be here awhile. We're
gonna have to think about getting
more food and water.
THOMAS
Well, we should have enough here
for a week if we eat sparingly.
Water is a different story. We only
have a few gallons under the sink.
MARIA
We should put out containers on the
roof.
BILL
Do you guys have buckets?
THOMAS
Yeah I am sure we have something.
June do we have something?
JUNE
Yes, we have something.
BRADLEY
Let's just hope it rains. Ma
where's your insulin?
JUDY
I put it in the freezer.
JUNE
That should last for awhile.
JUDY
I have about four days worth. You
guys can't get rid of me.
Tracey comes back into the room.
TRACEY
I am so sorry.
JUNE
Don't worry the water will come on
and we'll wash it away like it was
never there. You won't be the only
one who has to go.
SID
Oh, I can guarantee that. Those
veggie burgers ran right through
me. Thanks Thomas.
They all laugh as Sid pats his stomach.
SID (CONT'D)
Why don't we get those buckets set
up from now.
JUNE
I'll get some.
13 EXT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT ROOFTOP DAY 13
The group are carrying buckets and pans and plastic bowls on
the roof.
BILL
Look. The Empire State building is
burning.
SID
Oh no.
BRADLEY
Not again.
The Manhattan skyline is glowing with pockets of fire and at
it's highest point, the Empire state building is starting to
burn.
MARIA
Do you think they can save it?
BRADLEY
There are too many fires. No one
lives there.
SID
But it's the whole city. The
symbol.
BRADLEY
It'll be the statue of liberty.
They can't stop all these fires.
THOMAS
I bet they aren't even trying.
JUNE
What do you mean?
THOMAS
I think they are leaving us here to
die. Why close off the roads? Give
us a fighting chance.
BRADLEY
They need to get emergency vehicles
in.
THOMAS
When was the last time you heard
sirens?
The group is quiet.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
Not since this began. I think they
are chalking up this city. Too many
people to save and place somewhere.
You saw what happened in New
Orleans. There's a lot more
refugees here than down there.
Refugees who are probably
radioactive.
SID
Shit. You may be right.
THOMAS
That building is going to burn and
we aren't going to see anyone help.
PENNY
Is it wrong to think that is
pretty?
BRADLEY
No. It's amazing to see it through
all that.
PENNY
I feel so bad for those people.
BRADLEY
The radio said that people are
swimming across to Brooklyn and
Queens. They are finding life rafts
on the shore.
JUDY
This is pretty different than World
War II.
BRADLEY
I told ya.
JUDY
Shut your mouth.
PENNY
Oh no.
BRADLEY
It's happening.
Slowly the Empire state building starts to collapse on to
itself, sending a cloud of dust and smoke across the island
and out to the water. The falling building starts toppling
other buildings on it's way down. Fires are spreading across
the island.
The group stands there holding each other, feeling small and
helpless.
FADE TO BLACK.
DAY 3
14 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT NIGHT 14
Flies are everywhere in the apartment. They are running out
of coal and food and have very little water left. Tracey is
trying to use the bathroom in the tub, that is filled with
feces. Thomas is in the kitchen opening a can of beans and
throwing the can in a pile of cans and wrappers in the
corner.
As the sun goes down the group looks tired and dirty.
Although battered they are not broken. They sit down to
dinner together.
The dinner is beans, sauerkraut, cream corn and stale
crackers.
MARIA
Thank you for the food June and
Thomas.
JUNE
Your welcome Maria.
MARIA
You two have been so kind to us.
JUNE
You would have done the same for
us.
MARIA
I don't know if I could have done
this.
JUNE
You would have. We look out for
each other.
BILL
You know...you and June have been
great but we really should think
about getting out of here. It's
been days. Nothing is getting
better.
SID
If the mob gets past the national
guard, we should try it.
BRADLEY
They're not getting out of the
city.
PENNY
They can't let them burn to death.
JUNE
They won't let them burn.
PENNY
They can't stop the fires and can't
get them out. They will eventually
all burn.
SID
They'll starve and dehydrate first.
PENNY
What do you think it's like over
there?
THOMAS
I can't imagine being trapped. At
least we have the island.
BRADLEY
That's if it's still there.
THOMAS
Exactly.
SID
I say if they make it through, we
should go. We have a better chance
out of the city. I think Thomas was
right. They are trying to keep us
here to die. And we can't be the
only people out there to realize
that.
THOMAS
Things could be real bad out there
over the next few days.
SID
We should go soon while we have the
strength and it isn't too bad yet.
THOMAS
I don't want to leave. I don't know
what's out there. Maybe we can go
find food and water and bring it
back.
BILL
We can't travel with the baby.
MARIA
Oh no, it's too crazy out there.
SID
Well we have to make a decision
soon. We should listen to the
radio.
JUNE
Well tonight we can have a nice
dinner.
FADE TO BLACK.
They lay down in various areas of the apartment. Suddenly,
screams are heard and foot steps on stairs. Violently the
door starts to pound. June looks through the peep hole to see
a woman being dragged away from the door.
THOMAS
Get away from the door.
June scrambles to get things to block the door with. The
others hurry to help June.
JUNE
It's the girls downstairs.
THOMAS
Oh no! Open the door.
JUNE
No!
THOMAS
What are you talking about?
JUNE
We will all die.
THOMAS
We can't just ignore her.
They sit trying not to listen to the screams. Thomas can't
take it anymore and goes for the door but Sid stops him.
SID
I have to stop you from doing this.
THOMAS
Sid we're not animals.
SID
Tom. Leave it alone. Listen to
June.
Thomas sits back. They all sit in silence as the screams
continue.
THOMAS
Those girls are dying.
No one says anything. They all sit until the screams end.
MARIA
Do you think they have stopped?
PENNY
I think they are dead.
JUNE
Don't say that.
PENNY
Do you hope they are still alive?
So they can keep torturing them. Oh
my god... so long.
Bradley puts his arm around her. Penny buries her head into
his body.
JUNE
I'm sorry Penny.
THOMAS
It's not your fault. You were
right. We have to start thinking
differently if we want to live.
TRACEY
How are we going to live?
SID
She's right. I don't know how long
we can stay like this.
JUNE
We have enough food and liquid for
about a week.
THOMAS
Well we better make it last for
two.
BILL
Maria has to eat well for the baby.
THOMAS
Of course she does.
TRACEY
I don't have to eat regularly? This
isn't going to work. We have to go
somewhere. We should try our luck
out there.
SID
Do you have a mouse in your pocket?
I am not going anywhere. I'll take
my chances here.
TRACEY
You wanted to go home yesterday.
SID
Yesterday was different.
TRACEY
We at least need to go to a store.
BILL
There is nothing left.
JUDY
We are fine here. We have food and
water and each other. That is all
we need.
The group thinks about what to do in silence. Tracey gets up
and leaves with a roll of toilet paper. The group giggles.
FADE TO BLACK.
DAY 10
16 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT NIGHT 16
The room is dark. Heaving breathing is heard then a thud is
heard.
JUNE
Turn on a light hurry!
THOMAS
What's wrong?
JUNE
It's Judy she's in the hallway!
Bradley, with more facial hair, rushes to his mom but let's
June tend to her.
BRADLEY
Oh my god. There's no more. She's
out of insulin.
Everyone looks filthy and sick.
JUNE
She's out of the insulin?
BRADLEY
No ma.
PENNY
What can we do?
MARIA
Get sugar.
PENNY
Is it high or low?
MARIA
It's low she's passing out. With
out medicine she is going to go
into a comma.
Penny goes to get sugar.
TRACEY
Can I help.
JUNE
I don't know. I don't know what to
do.
BRADLEY
Just hold her.
JUNE
What?
THOMAS
Just hold her June.
JUNE
We have to help her. She's going to
die.
THOMAS
June. We have no insulin. We have
nothing. Just...
June starts to cry and holds Judy.
PENNY
I have the sugar...no.
SID
It's been too long with out
insulin. It wont help.
PENNY
We have to.
She starts to cry. Everyone starts crying while Judy is
passing in June's arms.
JUNE
I have to leave.
PENNY
Oh, of course honey.
Bradley and Penny help June from under Judy.
JUNE
No, we have to leave this house. We
all will die here. We can't stay
here any longer!
SID
Where are we going? Where can we
go?
PENNY
Honey. Come. Let's go to the front
room.
JUNE
OK.
June strokes Bradley's arm as she passes him.
Penny and June sit in front of the widows in the dark, both
crying.
JUNE (CONT'D)
Was I terrible.
PENNY
No worse than Tracey is. Anyway,
it's understandable. We all feel
the same way.
JUNE
What are we going to do?
PENNY
I don't know.
MARIA
Are you OK?
JUNE
Yeah, I'm OK. Is Bradley OK?
PENNY
Let me go check.
Penny walks over to Bradley who is sitting staring at his
mother on the floor. She sits next to him and rests her head
on his shoulder.
THOMAS
Sid, help me carry her into the
bedroom.
SID
OK.
They carry Judy into the bedroom. The women wrap Judy in
light fabrics and make her pretty. They light a few candles
and gather around the bed.
THOMAS
Judy was a wonderful woman who
would do anything for anyone. Her
life will be missed terribly. I
wish we could have done more for
you. Rest in peace.
SID
Amen.
THOMAS
Amen.
BILL
Amen.
MARIA
Amen.
JUNE
Amen.
PENNY
Amen. God be with you.
TRACEY
Shalom.
Bradley smiles at Tracey.
BRADLEY
Amen. Thank you guys.
TRACEY
No problem. Sorry about your
mother.
BRADLEY
Thank you.
TRACEY
Let's leave this room.
THOMAS
June take anything you need. We
should keep this room closed now.
JUNE
OK.
They gather in the living room.
PENNY
I think we should head upstate.
TRACEY
Why?
JUNE
Shouldn't we go down south? It's
warmer. Winter will be coming
quick.
THOMAS
I don't think we'd have a chance
down south. Besides it's so far.
Upstate may makes more sense. There
are farms and smaller towns
upstate. They may be willing to
help us.
SID
There is also more space.
BILL
So we know we can go upstate. Where
should we go and how can we get
there?
BRADLEY
All the cars are burnt out so
anywhere we go, we are walking.
PENNY
My parents house is outside Albany.
BRADLEY
That's far.
PENNY
Yeah and on foot it will take
forever.
THOMAS
Albany may be too big of a city. We
probably want to head towards a
town that doesn't have so many
people.
SID
We can go to the Catskills.
BRADLEY
Wanna catch a comic?
SID
I figure there were a lot of small
resorts up there that may be good
to live in. They may also have food
reserves.
JUNE
Where in the Catskills? Monticello?
SID
Why not?
TRACEY
You sound like you are planning a
vacation.
THOMAS
Look at it like a long road trip.
TRACEY
Really long.
THOMAS
Who wants to leave in the morning?
Each one of them raise their hand.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
OK tomorrow we start. Get some
sleep tonight.
They all lay down in corners and on furniture. Bradley is
wide awake.
FADE TO BLACK.
ACT II
DAY 11
17 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S APARTMENT DAY 17
Maria wakes up and is breast feeding the baby. Bill wakes up
and watches his wife.
BILL
Maybe we should stay here. She is
so little. If I can keep feeding
you she will be fine.
MARIA
We can't. You can not feed all of
us here.
BILL
I don't need much.
MARIA
Thank you, but I think we should
go.
BILL
I'm not so sure about this.
MARIA
It's been almost two weeks. I don't
think they are going to help us. I
don't think there is anyone else.
BILL
OK, I am going to go help pack up.
MARIA
I love you.
BILL
I love you too.
Bill walks into the dining room to help Thomas, June and Sid
pack up what little is left in the house.
JUNE
I have no idea what to pack for.
THOMAS
Well we can use almost anything I
am sure.
SID
I guess you weren't a scout.
JUNE
All we did was sell cookies.
SID
Oh we went out into the woods all
the time.
THOMAS
Yeah I did it too. We used to take
the ferry out to Staten Island.
SID
Yeah that's where we used to go.
BILL
We should think about shelter too.
THOMAS
Yeah I figured what ever sheets you
guys are using now and some garbage
bags. Maybe we can find some twine.
JUNE
We have twine.
THOMAS
Great. We should be able to make
some kind of shelter out there.
JUNE
There isn't much food left at all.
Some rice and dry beans and some
flour.
THOMAS
Well that's almost a meal.
SID
We are going to need as many
lighters and matches as we can
find.
THOMAS
Yeah I never was able to use a
stick or flint to start a fire.
SID
Me neither.
TRACEY
You guys are all ready huh?
SID
Pretty much. If you call this
ready.
TRACEY
I don't even know what to be ready
for.
THOMAS
Well we are as good as we are going
to be.
JUNE
What about clothes? What if we are
homeless in the winter?
THOMAS
If we are still homeless by winter
we will be dead.
The group splits the bags and packages and start to move the
furniture from the door. After clearing the furniture they
slowly open the door and see a dead woman's body on the
stairs.
JUNE
Oh my god no.
THOMAS
Oh no.
SID
Don't look.
JUNE
Is it her? It is her.
THOMAS
Yes, it's her.
JUNE
We should have let her in.
THOMAS
No, you were right. We'd all be
dead. You did the right thing.
PENNY
Let's go.
As they make there way down the blood covered stairs they
pass the open door of the women's apartment. They can see the
decaying bodies of the other woman downstairs and her
boyfriend.
THOMAS
Just keep moving.
PENNY
What's going to be out there?
BRADLEY
We'll be fine out there.
PENNY
But what's out there?
THOMAS
I don't know.
They make it to the front door and go out to the burnt orange
world.
SID
Try not to get ashes in your eyes.
PENNY
My god. The whole world is burning.
From a basement apartment a woman, Bea and her adult son
Johnny come out to the sidewalk.
BEA
Tom!
BRADLEY
Keep walking, Keep walking.
THOMAS
No.
BEA
Oh my god! I didn't know you where
still here. God is great, I tell
you what.
THOMAS
Hey Bea, how have you been?
BEA
Between the world falling down and
this jackass, I am amazed I am
still alive.
THOMAS
Hi Johnny.
JOHNNY
Hi Thomas.
BEA
Look at this...my God, what did we
do Thomas? How could we do this?
This to God's world?
THOMAS
Bea. I need you to get some clothes
and a coat. Something water proof.
Pack up anything you may need. You
and Johnny have to come with us.
JUNE
I'll go downstairs with her.
THOMAS
We all should. It's not safe out
here.
18 INT. BEA & JOHNNY'S APARTMENT DAY 18
The apartment is a concrete basement. Dark and cold with old,
discarded items laying about. They all continue deeper on. In
front of them is a white apartment door. When they go in it
is a normal apartment. Just filthy from days of the disaster.
JUNE
I didn't know that you had this
place in here.
BEA
Please excuse the mess. You know
it's been pretty hard to clean.
JUNE
Believe me we know. We were all in
our apartment the whole time.
BEA
Oh my.
She opens the door and the group is hit with a strong scent
of human waste.
BRADLEY
Oh my god.
PENNY
Be good.
BEA
I'm sorry.
THOMAS
Don't worry Bea. Let's keep
focused. It will get dark before we
know it.
BEA
We'll hurry. Pack your shit dumb
ass.
Johnny walks into his room. Bea, June, and Penny go into
another room.
BRADLEY
What do they have in the kitchen?
SID
We should help them pack.
They open the cupboards and see nothing but baking soda.
SID (CONT'D)
Dude, they have no food. They are
gonna have to eat what we have.
THOMAS
We'll find something. We will.
SID
Well I hope so.
Johnny comes out wearing a coat and carrying a knapsack.
THOMAS
You don't have to wear that now
Johnny.
JOHNNY
I figured it will keep the ash off
me.
BRADLEY
You're gonna suffocate in that get
up.
SID
You guys got any food?
JOHNNY
Well we have some ramen.
SID
That will do.
Johnny walks back into the concrete front room and uncovers
crates of ramen.
JOHNNY
We don't have enough water to boil
em but you can eat em like chips.
SID
I am sure we will.
PENNY
OK, Let's get out of here.
TRACEY
Look what we found.
JUNE
We can't take all of that.
BEA
Please take all you can. We will
need it.
THOMAS
Pack whatever you can carry. Hey
Bea, can we take some of those
bats?
BEA
I got a couple of crowbars back
there too.
SID
That will help.
BEA
Take what you can. Lord knows we'll
need it out there. A group of punks
killed the lady upstairs and I
heard the couple on the fourth
floor screaming the other night.
THOMAS
That's horrible. Someone killed the
women downstairs from us.
BEA
Oh my God. Do you really think we
should leave?
THOMAS
I do but you shouldn't if you feel
safer here.
BEA
I'll take my chances out there.
They all leave.
19 EXT. OCEAN AVE BROOKLYN DAY 19
They walk down the block trying to avoid areas of fire. They
are passing Prospect Park. They can see people running
through the park. Bill holds Maria and Stephanie the baby
close by.
20 EXT. FLATBUSH AVE DAY 20
They turn down onto Flatbush Avenue and stop in their tracks.
The tree lined streets seems like a tunnel to hell. The
burning city behind the trees shine through the smoke and
ash.
People are walking like zombies towards the manhattan bridge.
As they get closer they can hear the roar of people. Up ahead
are hundreds of people, being held back by National
guardsmen.
Each side of the bridge and BQE are guarded. There are tanks
and armed men blocking entrance to Brooklyn and exit from
Brooklyn using the BQE. People are screaming to get to there
families. Desperation fills the air.
Fear comes across the faces of the national guardsmen as the
crowds of starving, scared people begin to rock the
barricades.
Tear gas is fired into the crowd. The crowd surges forwards
from both sides. The guardsmen fall back, firing into the
crowd. People fall. Men, women and children are shot and
trampled. The troops from the Manhattan side and the Brooklyn
side meet in the center and are overwhelmed by the people.
Their guns are stolen and the guardsmen are trampled.
Thomas, June, Penny, Bradley, Sid, Tracey, Bill, Maria,
Stephanie, Bea and Johnny are sucked up into the crowd of
people.
THOMAS
Head for the on-ramp! Hold on to
each other.
People are trying to push by them breaking their link to each
other.
JUNE
Penny!
BRADLEY
I got her!
SID
Hold on to the baby!
Sid wraps himself around Bill and Maria. Tracey covers what's
left open of Maria with her body. A man next to her is shot
in the head. Tracey screams.
TRACEY
They're shooting at us! Run!
THOMAS
Hurry, let's get over to them.
JUNE
I'm gonna fall!
Thomas grabs June and Lifts her off the ground. They run
towards Bradley and Penny.
THOMAS
Johnny, Grab your mom!
JOHNNY
I'm trying.
Bea is getting roughed up in the crowd until she pulls out a
crowbar and starts hitting people. Bea begins moving towards
the group.
BEA
Get the fuck out of my way or I'll
break your knees!
BRADLEY
I can't believe her.
PENNY
She's great, grab her.
BRADLEY
You kidding? She'll swing on me.
PENNY
Get her.
Bradley shields himself from Bea and gears her and Johnny
towards the group.
BRADLEY
Hurry lets keep moving.
PENNY
Can you keep up?
BEA
I got it. Let's go.
BRADLEY
I don't know if I can keep up.
From above them helicopters start to fly by.
PENNY
Look rescue copters.
SID
Those aren't for personnel.
PENNY
What are they?
SID
Artillery. Get off the highway! Go,
go, hurry!
The helicopters begin firing on the people running.
PENNY
Oh my God!
THOMAS
Hurry head for the buildings.
They start running under the underpass, towards the projects.
Gunshots start from the project buildings towards the
helicopters.
The people running above the BQE are falling left and right.
The road is littered with refugees. They huddle for a moment.
PENNY
What is happening? Why are they
shooting us!
BRADLEY
They are contaminated...Everyone
who got through from Manhattan. You
saw how many fire there were. They
had to be more satellites that fell
there.
JUNE
Their faces were all boiled.
SID
That could have been the fire too.
THOMAS
We can't stay here. They are going
to send more troops.
BILL
If they have more troops.
THOMAS
We can't risk that.
BILL
I am not taking her out in the rain
of bullets! I'll take my chances
down here.
THOMAS
Bill, we can't stay here. I know
your worried but...
BILL
I ain't worried I am scared to
fucking death! I don't even know
who's country is shooting at us up
there. I am not taking my daughter
and my wife out there.
BRADLEY
Bill, I don't want anything to
happen to Stephanie.
But those people shooting those
copters are going to attract a lot
of attention. We have to keep
moving man. I can't breathe dude
but I don't want to die here.
BILL
I'm sorry man. OK lets go.
A helicopter is hovering by the building and aims a rocket
launcher at the top floors that are firing. An automatic
weapon leans out a window and starts to fire on the copter.
The gas tank is hit and explodes causing the tail to rip off
and break the blades. The rocket launcher goes off in the
helicopter and blows it up.
THOMAS
OK maybe we need to wait a moment.
BILL
Honestly this is probably our best
chance.
Thomas smirks at Bill and they all continue to run under the
underpass. They stop in the shadows.
MARIA
Wow.
In front they can see a huge hole in the BQE. Light is
pouring in from above, through the hole, down to them. Under
the hole is a crater with cars and cement in it. Twisted
metal sticks out of the wreckage.
BILL
A satellite must have fallen. I
wonder if it is contaminated.
THOMAS
Let's hope it's buried deep enough.
Above the people running are trapped between the hole and the
helicopters.
Hundreds of refugees, most suffering radiation sickness,
stand before a flying firing range. Mothers are shielding
their children's eyes.
MARIA
What's happening up there?
THOMAS
I don't know.
PENNY
They're praying.
A couple jumps from the overpass, down on to mangled cars and
metal below.
TRACEY
Oh no. We got to go.
SID
No...don't move at all.
From either side of the underpass, they are showered with a
sheet of bullets. Sections of the over pass start to rip
apart, allowing for more beams of light to shine through. The
group is huddled, praying that concrete above them doesn't
give way to a bullet.
TRACEY
We're going to die! Sid! Sid!
Sid holds her as tight as he can to his chest, While he
shields her with his body.
More people jump to their deaths. Bodies fall like dark
snowflakes. Glistening in the light as they fall. June locks
eyes with a woman who had not died from her fall, but who's
back was broken under the weight of her lover. They stare at
each other as June clutches Thomas. The woman's eyes never
come off of June until her body is riddled with bullets.
As quickly as it started the shooting is over. The bodies
stop falling and the helicopters fly away.
A curtain of blood falls through both sides of the highway
and the hole in the over pass. A waterfall of terror and
pain.
The group from the apartment begin to walk looking slowly at
the bodies. They come to the curtain of blood and have to
pass.
Shocked, tired and covered in blood, they continue walking
under the underpass.
TRACEY (CONT'D)
Where are we going?
THOMAS
Monticello.
No one says anything else. They walk in silence.
BRIARCLIFF MANOR
21 EXT. ROADSIDE DINNER REFUGEE CAMP. 21
The buildings of the boroughs quickly give way to trees.
Trees filling up the sides of the highway.
BRADLEY
We'll be safer on these roads with
the trees as cover.
SID
Maybe the trees are cover for
someone else.
BRADLEY
Why you got to shit on my parade?
SID
Look. Maybe we should stop here.
JOHNNY
I'm hungry. Maybe they have some
food. Or somewhere we can cook.
BEA
You mention our food in front of
strangers and I'll leave you here.
JOHNNY
What? Maybe they can help.
BEA
Or maybe they kill you and take
your food. Tom, please, If anything
happens to me, please Tom. Don't
let him go on his own.
JOHNNY
Ma!
BEA
Tom please.
JOHNNY
Come on Ma!
THOMAS
We are all going to make it
upstate.
BEA
I'm just saying Tom...
THOMAS
I got ya honey...just don't go
dying on me. OK?
BEA
Hey I am tough.
BRADLEY
Like leather.
PENNY
Stop.
The group walks up to the diner.
JUNE
Do you think it is safe?
THOMAS
No.
TRACEY
We don't have much of a choice.
SID
I guess not.
MARIA
I can't go in there with the baby.
SID
You wanna stay out here?
There are scattered pockets of people along the road and
outside.
MARIA
Fine.
BILL
We should stay together.
As they walk towards the diner a man with a rife start
screaming.
BO
Stay where you are.
BRADLEY
Don't move.
BO
What's your business here?
THOMAS
We just wanted to sit for the
night. We are heading upstate.
BO
Why?
THOMAS
To try and find a safe place to
live.
BO
Well you ain't gonna find that
upstate. Are you girls here of your
free will?
JUNE
What does he mean?
BO
Are ya! Don't try to influence
them!
JUNE
We are here with these men by
choice!
BO
Come over slowly.
BRADLEY
And we are doing this why?
SID
I guess it beats the woods.
22 INT. ROADSIDE DINNER REFUGEE CAMP. NIGHT 22
Inside is dark and filled with smoke from cigarettes and
candles. There are squirrel skins all over the kitchen. Sid
and Bo are the only people they see.
SID
We should camp outside.
BRADLEY
I'm with you.
BO
Sal, we got a caravan.
Sal comes up to them.
SAL
Hi, where yall from?
THOMAS
Brooklyn.
SAL
I heard they weren't letting anyone
in or out of the city. How'd you
guys get out?
THOMAS
There was a riot and we got out in
the chaos.
SAL
Lucky kids. You better protect your
ladies out here. Things are getting
rough up here. There aren't a lot
of cops in these towns.
BRADLEY
You guys didn't get any national
guards men?
SAL
No, these people all started
showing up from upstate. Lot's of
towns up north got hit. You see
that woman over there.
BRADLEY
Yeah.
There is a young woman, badly bruised and shaky all alone in
a booth.
SAL
She came in here yesterday. A
family trying to get down to the
city found her walking on the side
of the road. We kinda become a sort
of trading post slash refugee camp
since the accident.
PENNY
What happened to her?
SAL
From what I gathered her family was
killed and she was being taken to
be sold for food and supplies.
Who knows what they did to her
before that. Anyway...she fell off
the truck and hid in the forest.
Stay away from her. She's a bit
fragile. If you know what I mean?
PENNY
They were trading her for supplies?
SAL
I told you things are different up
here. You guys are welcomed to stay
the night but you should be very
careful.
MARIA
I don't like this.
BILL
Me neither but it is safer than
outside.
SAL
Yall can have table 16 over there.
How long will yall be staying?
THOMAS
Just the night.
SAL
I'm sorry to ask this but do you
have anything that you can donate
to the cause?
THOMAS
We do, thank you for letting us
stay here. How's four packs of
Ramen noodles?
SAL
That's more than enough. We'll
throw it in the pot. We got a stew
on. We're all out of squirrel meat
but it's filled with some veggies
we got from that family.
THOMAS
That's fine by me.
BRADLEY
Well let's add some Ramen and have
dinner.
They turn over some packages and set up their campsite at
table 16. That night they sit with their new friends and eat.
After dinner they lock the doors and everyone goes to sleep.
FADE TO BLACK.
23 INT. ROADSIDE DINNER REFUGEE CAMP. NIGHT 23
Maria wakes up to the sounds of screams outside.
MARIA
Bill...Bill wake up.
BILL
What?
THOMAS
I heard it too. It's coming from
outside.
BILL
What's going on?
The screams are heard again.
PENNY
No, not again.
BRADLEY
Nothing happening this time.
Bradley pull a gun out of his bag.
PENNY
Where did you get that?
BRADLEY
Fell off a truck.
PENNY
Be careful.
BRADLEY
Thank you.
Bradley walks over to Thomas and Bill who are by the window
with Bo.
SAL
Don't get involved boys. You don't
want none of them. They don't know
she's in here. They ain't gonna
come here.
THOMAS
What about those women?
BO
They're having their way with those
girls.
THOMAS
You've been watching this?
BO
It happens all the time. Why you
think we lock the door?
BRADLEY
Open the door.
BO
No fucking way.
BRADLEY
Now shit dick.
BO
If I open this door you ain't
coming back.
BRADLEY
Let me deal with that. Just open
the door.
SID
You going out there?
BRADLEY
You ain't?
SID
I don't have a gun.
BILL
Where'd you get that?
Bo opens the door and let's the men out.
SAL
You ain't going big boy?
BEA
Johnny's better off right here.
Bo seems upset by that.
SAL
That's a good mother. Close it up
Bo.
He locks the door.
24 EXT. ROADSIDE DINNER REFUGEE CAMP. NIGHT 24
SID
One of us should have stayed with
the women.
THOMAS
Johnny's in there.
BILL
Great!
SID
Well we need a game plan now.
BRADLEY
Get the fuck off them!
SID
Shit.
Bradley starts walking towards the guys who run off.
THOMAS
That was easy.
They see Heather and Erica. Laying on the ground.
HEATHER
Please don't hurt us. We'll be
good. Just please don't hurt us.
Please no more.
BRADLEY
No one is going to hurt you. I
promise. But I need you to trust
us. We have to get back in there.
HEATHER
No, please just let us go.
BRADLEY
But they'll find you.
SID
Let them go, come on we have to get
back inside.
BRADLEY
We can't leave them here.
ERICA
You have to go. It's a trap.
HEATHER
Erica no...they're gonna kill us.
SID
What?
THOMAS
I think we need to move now.
The first men have returned with many others. The women start
screaming and try to run.
MAN 1
I believe those women belong to us.
BRADLEY
Not anymore.
MAN 1
I don't think you four are in a
position to argue.
BRADLEY
I don't think we are planning on
arguing bro.
MAN 1
That's fine.
More men come from out of the woods. Bradley pulls out the
gun.
BRADLEY
Shit. Back up or I'll shoot you.
The men stop for a moment.
MAN 1
No need for firearms man. You can
only hit a few of us anyway.
BRADLEY
I'll hit enough.
THOMAS
We got to get back to the diner
man.
Bill is banging on the diner door.
BILL
Open the fucking door.
25 INT. ROADSIDE DINNER REFUGEE CAMP. NIGHT 25
BO
I told them. We don't open the door
after night fall.
MARIA
Open the door let them in.
BO
Nope. Those boys don't got no
problems with us. We don't want a
problem with them.
SAL
They our best customers.
Penny walks behind Bo and puts a knife to his throat.
PENNY
Open the fucking door now.
BO
OK mam.
SAL
Listen honey. You don't want to go
out there. Please. Think of the
baby.
PENNY
Open the fucking door. Maria take
the gun.
MARIA
What?
PENNY
Take the fucking gun.
SAL
That's our only firearm.
PENNY
We'll fucking return it.
SAL
Not if you're dead!
JUNE
Give me your gun. Maria open the
door and grab your baby. Come on
with us girl.
The shaky girl doesn't want to go.
PENNY
Bea can you run?
BEA
What about the bags?
PENNY
Fuck em!
JUNE
Come on girl.
SAL
Oh she knows what happens out
there. She's going no where.
PENNY
Leave her if she doesn't want to.
The women and Johnny get together by the door.
PENNY (CONT'D)
Don't worry. I am sorry about this
Sal but we have to help them. June,
hold the gun on Bo.
SAL
Now you wait a minute.
26 EXT. ROADSIDE DINER REFUGEE CAMP. NIGHT 26
The stand off is continuing.
MAN 1
Yall might as well walk away. Your
women are locked in there and they
aren't coming out again. They're
ours now.
THOMAS
What are you talking about?
MAN 1
The old man sold them to us. Them
and that runaway.
We're just here to collect. By now
the old man has gotten them ready
for us.
THOMAS
June!
SID
No.
BRADLEY
Don't fucking move!
BILL
Open the fucking door! Are you OK
in there! Maria!
PENNY
Back away from the door. We're
coming out.
BILL
They're coming out.
BRADLEY
What?
One of the men go for Bradley's gun. He shoots him dead.
BRADLEY (CONT'D)
Holy shit.
SID
What did you do?
BRADLEY
Stay back!
SID
Dude we're dead.
Just then the girls come out. Penny has a knife to Bo's neck
and June has the gun to Sal.
SID (CONT'D)
Holy shit.
BRADLEY
What are you doing!
PENNY
This fuck locked us in. I think
he's with them.
BRADLEY
There gonna sell ya.
PENNY
Fucked if they are!
SAL
Stay back boys!
PENNY
Come on!
THOMAS
Come on where!
JUNE
Not here!
The apartment group gather together. And starts to back away.
Thomas goes to take the gun from June.
JUNE (CONT'D)
I got it.
THOMAS
Oh, OK. Everyone in the diner! Go
now. And I want the keys to the
truck.
SAL
Now you're going too far.
JUNE
Your head will go pretty far if you
don't give him those keys.
The group gets into the back of the truck. Thomas starts it.
SAL
I'll fucking kill you.
BRADLEY
I got him honey. Get on the truck.
JUNE
Thanks.
BRADLEY
You fucking people are disgusting.
MAN 2
We'll get you. You ain't going no
where.
BRADLEY
No one come out until Sal is back
or we kill him.
The men go into the diner and close the door. They load
everyone onto the back of the truck and take off.
PENNY
Do we still need him?
BRADLEY
No.
Penny kicks him off the truck. Sal rolls down the road.
MARIA
I can't believe they were going to
sell us.
BRADLEY
I'd sell ya.
PENNY
You'd buy me.
The truck drives down the road.
JUNE
Are you two OK?
ERICA
I am sorry we helped them.
JUNE
You didn't help them.
HEATHER
I tried not to scream...I tried.
PENNY
This was all planned?
ERICA
They wanted you not the men. They
figured it was easier to get to you
if they took care of the men first.
We've been with them for three
days. Three days...for a gallon of
gasoline.
PENNY
This gasoline got us out of here. I
thank you.
HEATHER
Thank you.
JUNE
How did you end up with them?
ERICA
They came with a truck and rounded
up women from our campus. They have
a pen of women. Maybe twenty, all
in dog kennels.
PENNY
Did you tell the cops?
ERICA
What cops? All the Police are in
the city trying to fight the fires
and secure the contaminated. There
aren't laws up here anymore. Anyone
with a gun can do whatever they
want.
JUNE
You are welcome with us.
ERICA
Thanks again.
After awhile the truck runs out of gas.
THOMAS
We have to get it off the road.
BRADLEY
You think they are following us?
THOMAS
I don't know, better if we didn't
know.
They push the truck off the main road and into the woods.
TRACEY
Now what?
THOMAS
I guess we camp out here. There
wasn't much in the truck but there
was another map and a compass, some
flares and another crow bar. You
want it Bea?
They laugh.
SID
We should walk further before we
camp out. So that we are far from
the truck. Could I see that
compass?
THOMAS
Sounds good...Here.
BRADLEY
OK compass boy, what direction is
the Catskills.
SID
Hmmm. That way.
27 EXT. CLEARING IN THE WOODS. NIGHT 27
The group walks through the forest far from the road. They
trip and stumble and fall until they find a clearing.
BRADLEY
Isn't this a bit open.
THOMAS
Yeah we can see someone coming
before they get to us.
BILL
Good point. OK let's stop here for
the night and head out in the
morning.
THOMAS
I'll stay up the first watch.
BILL
OK. I will stay up with you.
THOMAS
Cool.
SID
Wake me up in a few hours so you
guys can sleep long enough for us
not to loose too much daylight.
TRACEY
Who was that girl back there?
ERICA
Stacy...They sent her three days
before they found us.
We found her walking along the
highway, then boom they found us.
HEATHER
She was supposed to find other
women and bring us to the kennel.
Like bait. Like us.
PENNY
Why would she do it?
ERICA
They had her sisters. One was
twelve the other one was fifteen.
They threaten her with what they
would do to her everyday she wasn't
back. I don't know if they are even
alive anymore.
TRACEY
My god. We should have taken her.
BILL
We have to protect us now.
PENNY
We're all we got. Welcome Erica and
Heather.
ERICA
Thank you.
HEATHER
Thank you very much.
JUNE
Don't worry about it.
Bill and Thomas sit, looking in different directions, while
the rest fall asleep. June rests her head on Thomas.
JUNE (CONT'D)
Don't stay up all night. We need
you.
THOMAS
I won't. You get some rest
gunslinger.
JUNE
You saw that right? I'll bust a
cap.
THOMAS
Yeah, I thought you would shoot him
for the hell of it.
JUNE
I thought about it. I really
thought about it.
THOMAS
Why didn't you?
JUNE
I didn't want to be like them yet.
I figured, if I am going to be an
animal...let it be tomorrow.
THOMAS
I'll see you tomorrow lady. Rest. I
love you.
JUNE
I love you too.
FADE TO BLACK.
DAY 12
28 EXT. CLEARING IN THE WOODS. DAY 28
Sid is standing guard with Bradley.
BRADLEY
You think we should wake em up?
SID
Nah let em sleep a bit more. It was
a long night. Where'd you get that
gun?
BRADLEY
After my dad died, my uncle gave it
to me and told me, "You're the man
of the house now Brad! If any
nigger tries to come into this
house, you got to protect your mom."
SID
You ever shoot anyone before
tonight?
BRADLEY
What do you think?
SID
Really?
BRADLEY
Of course not. Do I know you? Yeah
I went out and shot my mom's black
boyfriend.
SID
I'm just asking.
BRADLEY
Damn man where are we going to eat
today?
SID
I wonder where we are?
THOMAS
We walked for awhile last night.
SID
I didn't know you were up.
THOMAS
Yeah shooting niggers wakes me
right up these days.
They all laugh.
SID
Where do you think we are?
THOMAS
I don't know but I smell water.
BRADLEY
Fucking Davy Crockett over here.
THOMAS
Nah don't you smell water in the
air.
SID
I smell bull shit in the air...I
actually do smell shit in the air.
THOMAS
Oh, I think the baby needs to be
changed.
BRADLEY
Yeah we should get going anyway.
The group gathers the rest and starts walking. Again.
29 EXT. SUBURBAN AREA DAY 29
They walk past the clearings and begin to see houses and
yards.
MARIA
I think we found a neighborhood.
PENNY
We should be careful.
SID
Lets just keep moving.
People are looking at them from inside their houses. The
group just continues on.
CROTON ON THE HUDSON
Mile by mile they walk. The houses growing more sporadic with
each step. Finally they find themselves walking along a hill
over looking a large body of water.
THOMAS
Told ya.
BRADLEY
Fucking dolphin.
PENNY
What?
BRADLEY
Don't ask.
JUNE
I need a bath.
MARIA
Me too.
THOMAS
Let's get down there.
SID
We should take a moment and stake
it out first.
BRADLEY
Stake it out. We haven't seen
people for two hours.
SID
Still.
BRADLEY
OK let's go down and check the
area.
They hike down the side of the hill and see a small camp of
tents.
BILL
Oh shit. There are people there.
BRADLEY
I wonder who they are.
THOMAS
We'd better just keep on moving.
JUNE
What if they can help us?
TRACEY
That hasn't been our track record
so far.
People are slowly watching the group from the bushes. When
they turn to go they are facing many armed people, dressed
like natives but obviously not.
GWEN
I wouldn't move too quickly.
THOMAS
We're not trying to mess with you.
JUNE
I just wanted a bath.
JACOB
Well, why didn't you just come down
and go swimming. Why are you guys
spying on us?
SID
We've had some unpleasantness with
other people along the way.
GWEN
Sorry to hear that. You guys are
welcomed to join us for awhile.
JACOB
Where are you guys from?
BRADLEY
Brooklyn.
DANIELLE
A few of us are from the city. How
is it down there.
BRADLEY
No good. We had to leave.
GWEN
Come to our camp and meet the
others.
THOMAS
Thank you.
They all walk orderly to the camp by the shore. As they are
walking they see the Croton Dam rising out of the horizon.
PENNY
Wow.
THOMAS
That's the Croton Damn. I've been
here before.
JACOB
We live in the state park.
THOMAS
Who's we?
JACOB
A bunch of us came down when our
schools shut down. We were too far
from home, so we came out here and
stayed.
GWEN
No one bothers us here and we are
close enough to get supplies from
the bigger towns.
PENNY
You don't trade women do you?
GWEN
No that's pretty sexist and
barbaric.
PENNY
You wouldn't believe what is
happening out there.
GWEN
They're trading women?
PENNY
And worse.
They walk into the main tent city. Every one is under thirty
and seems to be a summer vacation.
BILL
Wow, this place is great.
THOMAS
For now, what are they gonna do in
the winter?
BILL
Oh yeah.
THOMAS
The grasshopper and the ant, man.
BILL
The Ant-man?
THOMAS
No the Ant...Man.
BILL
What ant?
THOMAS
Forget it.
GWEN
I'm Gwen, this is Jacob.
JACOB
Hello.
GWEN
You're welcome to stay here as long
as you contribute to the society.
THOMAS
Thank you very much. We'll only be
spending the night though.
GWEN
That's fine. You may change your
mind.
THOMAS
I might.
Gwen walks off with Jacob.
JUNE
Were you flirting?
THOMAS
Oh yeah, I love the outdoors type.
TRACEY
I want a bath.
PENNY
I'm with you. I stink. Stay with
our stuff will you.
BRADLEY
Yeah go ahead.
BILL
You mind?
MARIA
We're coming too. She'll love the
water.
Bradley and Thomas stay behind with the stuff.
BRADLEY
What do you think?
THOMAS
They look like a bunch of college
kids.
BRADLEY
You trust them?
THOMAS
No.
The others are all in the water, clothes and all. Washing
themselves and genuinely smiling.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
Penny likes you.
BRADLEY
She's a nice girl. I like her too.
Penny is washing her hair in the water.
THOMAS
Dude. I'm sorry about your mom.
BRADLEY
There wasn't anything we could do.
THOMAS
I know. I just wish we could have.
This whole time I keep expecting to
wake up. Like everything never
happened.
BRADLEY
Out here, right now...it doesn't
seem like it did. It seems like
we're just camping out somewhere.
THOMAS
You think we should stay here?
BRADLEY
I've been thinking it.
THOMAS
They're not prepared, these guys.
They're having fun, but they are
gonna run out of food and they
don't have any real shelter. They
are all going to die this winter.
Look at them.
BRADLEY
We can't let them die.
Bradley is looking at the group from the apartment.
BRADLEY (CONT'D)
You know? We need to keep them
safe.
THOMAS
I don't know man. I feel like...I
mean I have been afraid every day
that June is going to die. Or
anyone else really. I don't even
know what is waiting for us up
state.
BRADLEY
Neither do we but we got out of the
city and because of it we are
alive, on a lake, about to be wet
by silly bitches.
Penny and June come up and soak the two.
JUNE
Gimme a hug.
THOMAS
Nah let me get clean first or
you'll be dirty again.
JUNE
You two look terrible. Go have fun
for a second. Cool off.
BRADLEY
I'm out.
PENNY
Hurry up.
FADE TO:
30 EXT. WOODED AREA NEAR TENT CITY. LATE AFTERNOON 30
The group is pitching tents with the help of the college
kids. After their tents are done they all walk down to a fire
on the shore.
DANIELLE
We don't have a lot of food but
we'll share with you.
BILL
Thank you, I'm Bill by the way.
DANIELLE
I'm Danielle. We should all try to
get to know each other.
MARIA
I'm Maria and this is our daughter
Stephanie.
DANIELLE
Aw she's so cute.
MARIA
Thank you.
KEITH
I'm Keith from Florida.
BRIAN
Hello I'm Brian.
THOMAS
When did you guys get here?
BRIAN
Oh in the beginning.
THOMAS
Oh, I thought you guys all were new
too, since you were with us.
DANIELLE
Gwen and Jacob and the others are
all "Lord of the Flies". I like to
meet the new people.
HEATHER
I'm Heather.
ERICA
And I'm Erica.
HEATHER
June and Penny and everyone saved
us yesterday.
PENNY
I'm Penny.
DANIELLE
Hi Penny.
PENNY
Hello.
DANIELLE
Saved you from what?
HEATHER
We were kidnapped by a group of
guys. They were trading us for
goods.
KEITH
You guys are lucky you're traveling
with a group.
THOMAS
Yeah, you could say that.
KEITH
Where are you going?
THOMAS
We figured the Catskills.
BRADLEY
Unless something better comes up.
KEITH
Why the Catskills?
SID
We figured that there would be less
people to fight over food with.
THOMAS
What are you guys gonna do in the
winter?
BRIAN
We really haven't had a real plan
yet.
DANIELLE
Well there's that town Haven,
upstate.
MARIA
What's Haven about?
KEITH
Bull shit.
DANIELLE
Three days ago we met people from
there. They're a functional town
and trading post now.
SID
How are they so set up?
DANIELLE
They were a cannery. Fruits and
Vegetables. The factories was
mostly automated and the town is
small. They'll trade almost
anything.
SID
Why'd they leave if everything was
great up there?
DANIELLE
I don't know?
KEITH
They said something about having to
get to the city. I guess they had
family down there.
SID
Have you seen it?
JACOB
We haven't yet, but we want to.
SID
I didn't hear you come up.
GWEN
If you want to go we were heading
out in the morning, to discuss
terms of a barter with them.
JACOB
We are going to need supplies for
the winter. You can come with us.
THOMAS
We just might. We have to talk
about it together first.
GWEN
Of course. I hope you will join us
for dinner.
SID
That's what I'm talking about.
They all eat fish and apples for dinner. Jacob pulls out a
case of wine from his tent.
JACOB
Look what I got.
TRACEY
You people are my favorite people
in the world.
JACOB
Tomorrow we deal with the end of
days, Tonight...we drink.
They drink and eat as a drum circle begins. Thomas and June
are the first to dance with the nearly twenty young adults
camped out there.
31 EXT. LAKE NIGHT 31
At the end of the night the fire dies down and the entire
group of dancers are floating in the water. Some are clothed
but most are naked in the lake staring at the stars.
BRADLEY
You people do this every night?
KEITH
Every night.
BRADLEY
I could live like this.
BILL
Beats the fuck out of being a
grasshopper.
They all laugh but have no idea what Bill is talking about.
THOMAS
Don't you have to go check on your
wife?
BILL
She's fine.
JUNE
Be nice and enjoy the quiet. I wish
things could stay like this.
TRACEY
I really could stay right here
forever.
SID
Yeah this is nice.
THOMAS
Well, we got to get going tomorrow.
DANIELLE
You guys coming with us tomorrow or
are you heading for the Catskills.
THOMAS
What do you guys think?
BRADLEY
I'm for it. It's all farms once you
leave Brooklyn.
SID
We're going upstate anyway so we
might as well just check it out.
MARIA
If they have the food they're
talking about we should.
We don't know what we will find in
the Catskills.
BILL
I'm in. We better find some shelter
soon.
THOMAS
Alright. We'll sleep on it. Let's
see how we feel in the morning.
Thomas starts to get up.
JUNE
Where you going?
THOMAS
I've been pretty tired. I am gonna
catch a early sleep while we have a
roof.
JUNE
I'll come.
THOMAS
It's OK.
JUNE
No, I want to come.
She joins Thomas and walks into the tent.
BILL
I'm gonna get going too.
BEA
Yeah I got to hit the hay before
the hay hits me. Come on Johnny.
JOHNNY
Alright Ma.
BRADLEY
Yeah you need to go put yourself
away.
Penny smacks him in the head.
BRADLEY (CONT'D)
Hit the hay. "Hay" I said!
One by one the lake clears leaving Bradley and Penny in the
water.
BRADLEY (CONT'D)
Are you getting tired.
PENNY
No.
BRADLEY
Oh.
PENNY
Are you?
BRADLEY
That depends?
PENNY
On what?
BRADLEY
On how long you want to stay up.
PENNY
Are you flirting with me?
BRADLEY
I hope so. Am I?
PENNY
Yeah, you are.
She kisses him in the water.
32 INT. THOMAS AND JUNE'S TENT NIGHT 32
Thomas and June are also kissing. Thomas stops.
JUNE
What?
THOMAS
When we were sixteen I thought we'd
be married with a house an kid by
now.
JUNE
We still can be.
THOMAS
We will be, it's just that things
are so... not what I thought they'd
be. Could you imagine we would be
refugees in New York?
JUNE
Whereever we are it's OK if I'm
with you.
THOMAS
I love you.
JUNE
I love you too. Things will be
alright. They will.
THOMAS
I know. I think everyone wants to
stay here.
JUNE
Do you?
THOMAS
No, it's fun now but it won't be
when they run out of fish and the
water is frozen.
JUNE
32 I know. I like it here but I think 32
you're right. Whatever you think we
should do, I'm with you.
DAY 13
33 EXT. WOODED AREA NEAR TENT CITY. MORNING 33
Tracey wakes up and takes a roll of toilet paper into the
woods. Sid comes out and stretches, then rubs his belly.
TRACEY
You think we should go with them?
SID
I don't even think we should have
come here. For all we know the city
has regained order. I keep seeing a
fat homeless man taking a shit in
our bathroom. I just finished that
bathroom.
TRACEY
Oh how I wish we had that bathroom
again.
SID
I thought you hated the bathroom.
TRACEY
I just hated the toilet paper
holder. I loved the bathroom. I
told you that.
SID
No you didn't.
TRACEY
I'm sure I did you just don't pay
attention.
SID
OK.
TRACEY
I loved the bathroom. Maybe one day
we'll have it back.
SID
Don't worry I will make you a
better one.
TRACEY
OK I got to go find a bush.
SID
Enjoy.
34 IN. TENT MORNING 34
Penny wakes up, laying on Bradley.
PENNY
Morning.
BRADLEY
I don't want to wake up. I'm so
comfortable.
PENNY
We should go see if we are going to
Haven.
BRADLEY
OK...hey, I'm glad...I mean, last
night...
PENNY
I can't believe your blushing.
BRADLEY
Oh well fuck you then.
PENNY
Aw it's cute.
BRADLEY
OK lets go see what's happening.
35 EXT. WOODED AREA NEAR TENT CITY. MORNING 35
People are gathering near five of the Croton members. They
are packed up and seem to be ready to go.
THOMAS
I think we are coming with you
guys. We don't have much so it
won't take us long to pack up.
GWEN
OK. Hurry though. We have some
walking to do.
THOMAS
No problem.
The group packs up and says their good-byes then walks out of
town.
PEEKSKILL, NY
36 EXT. MOUNTAIN ROAD. MID DAY 36
Bea stops to sit on a rock.
BEA
I got to rest.
MARIA
Are you OK Mommy.
BEA
I have to stop. I feel like my foot
is falling off.
GWEN
We have to keep going.
THOMAS
Keep going?
KEITH
You got to hold on. She's and old
lady.
BEA
This old lady will smack your ear.
JUNE
We all need a break anyway. Let me
see your foot Bea.
Bea takes of her shoe to reveal her bloody foot.
JOHNNY
Ma, that doesn't look good.
BEA
Why do ya think I wanted to stop?
JUNE
Thomas, you should see this.
THOMAS
Oh man.
GWEN
Move over. You people should have
went upstate. We are never getting
there at this rate.
PENNY
You overflow with compassion.
Gwen dresses Bea's foot.
BEA
Wow, thank you honey. I'm sorry I'm
holding you up.
GWEN
No I am sorry. I'm just a little on
edge. I don't want us to stop on
the road too long. Do you think you
can walk?
BEA
I'll keep up. You don't worry.
A few miles up the road they see debris.
GWEN
Hold up.
THOMAS
What is it?
GWEN
I don't know.
THOMAS
Looks like bodies to me.
KEITH
He's right. They're bodies.
GWEN
I meant the armed men on the other
side of the bodies.
TRACEY
Oh my god. What do we do?
GWEN
We go back or walk up to them.
TRACEY
There has to be hundreds of bodies
there.
GWEN
Yeah, but they're dead.
JACOB
They could be radiated.
THOMAS
You guys want to try.
BEA
I got to go somewhere. I can't go
back like this.
PENNY
Then we have to go.
JUNE
Stay together and try not to step
on anyone.
BRADLEY
What difference does it make?
ERICA
It makes a difference.
JUNE
You can't step on them.
BRADLEY
They're dead.
SID
Just don't step on them OK?
BRADLEY
Oh yeah let's all gang up on me.
SID
Why don't one of us go talk to them
first.
DANIELLE
That's a good idea.
GWEN
OK it was your idea...go.
THOMAS
We all stay together. Let's go.
The group slowly manoeuvres around the dead bodies.
TRACEY
I can't do this.
SID
Just hold on. Keep looking up.
Sid guides Tracey around the dead.
THOMAS
I think they are screaming at us.
JUNE
What are they saying?
The men are raising their arms and screaming at them.
THOMAS
I can't tell. Keep moving.
GWEN
I think they said run.
THOMAS
Towards them or away?
Suddenly, from under them, arms of the dead people are
grabbing and biting at them.
MARIA
Ah!
THOMAS
They're alive!
SID
Run, Open your eyes! Run!
JUNE
Oh my god.
They run towards the men as they try to rip themselves free.
Bill can not move and Maria is starting to fall. Sid runs
toward Maria.
JUNE (CONT'D)
Thomas! Bill and Maria!
THOMAS
Keep running. I got Bill.
Thomas runs towards Bill. Brian helps him.
MARIA
Bill the baby!
SID
Go with Bill, I got the baby and
Maria!
Tracey, Bea, Johnny and June all keep moving, with Gwen and
Jacob.
DANIELLE
We have to help them. We can't get
there with out them.
JACOB
Keep moving!
Penny is kicking at the people grabbing at her legs.
PENNY
Get off me!
Bradley picks up Penny and puts her over his shoulder. Her
head is closer to the ground now.
PENNY (CONT'D)
Higher! Not lower! Just run!
BRADLEY
I am trying!
Brian and Thomas start kicking at the bodies holding down
Bill. Fingers and arms of the dying people break under their
feet.
BRIAN
They're too many of them.
THOMAS
Hang on Bill! Just hang on!
BILL
Help man! Help me!
Thomas and Brian drag Bill away but then fall and are
surrounded by dead and dying bodies.
THOMAS
Get up!
They all plow through the bodies and make it right up to the
armed guards.
SID
Listen we just want to keep moving.
We're no threat to you.
The malitia men make room for Charlie, a greying man with a
beard to step by. Charlie's hand's and face are burnt.
CHARLIE
I'm sorry about the guns but things
have been a bit lawless in these
parts. I'm Charlie Cortland, the
Mayor of Peekskill and these are
the Peekskill County Malitia.
THOMAS
Hello, I am Thomas.
GWEN
I'm Gwen we are ambassadors from
Croton on our way North. Can you
help us?
CHARLIE
Croton, Sure we'll help you all.
Why are you going up North?
GWEN
It's a sensitive matter.
CHARLIE
Oh young lady most things are now.
THOMAS
Sir, we're from Brooklyn and we are
going up North to find a town where
we can be safe. Things have gotten
real bad in the City.
CHARLIE
Yes, I have heard that.
THOMAS
We met up with the Croton group on
the way. We could use a little
medical help. We've all been a
little broken up.
CHARLIE
Well you and your secretive friends
can come into town and get
yourselves together.
THOMAS
Thank you.
CHARLIE
Oh no problem. Honest folks have to
stick together out here.
Charlie looks at Gwen.
JACOB
Be careful.
GWEN
I know. Sorry.
The group travel down the road and into the town.
37 EXT. PEEKSKILL TOWN CENTER. MID DAY 37
The town is filled with people dying from radiation
poisoning. Their skin is burned, bubbled and peeling off. But
all pry smiles from under the tortured skin. The group
remains terrified. A major portion of the town is burned out
but children play in the streets.
BILL
I haven't seen kids playing since
they fell.
ERICA
Me neither. They seem so happy.
HEATHER
They do. Just so scarred and burnt.
ERICA
I wonder what happened.
HEATHER
I'm sure we'll find out.
Many aspects of the town are the same. The bakery is open as
well as the grocery.
CHARLIE
We've turned the grocery into a
coop. Just like you trendy city
folks. Money don't mean nothing, so
we trade service for food and
goods. We all take a turn. Even me.
HEATHER
What kind of things do you all take
turns at.
CHARLIE
Well, hospital and nursery
volunteers, Farmers need folk to
harvest the crops and of course
guard duty.
THOMAS
You did a wonderful job Mr. Mayor.
CHARLIE
Why thank you young man.
THOMAS
Do you mind if I ask about the
night this all started?
CHARLIE
I do not mind Thomas but first lets
get your wounded looked after OK.
The group walks towards a hospital.
38 INT. HOSPITAL AFTERNOON. AFTERNOON 38
Inside is filled with burned people. The people in the
hospital look like the people on the street. Their bodies are
covered in Cancerous boils.
MARIA
Madre de Dios.
BILL
Oh my God.
PENNY
What happened to all of them?
CHARLIE
They all were in the middle of our
most major impact sight. These are
the people we could save. Anyway,
there's time for all that later.
Let's fix you guys up. This is
Pete. Pete's our main Physician.
PETE
Nice to meet all of you. As you can
see I am desperately understaffed
but if anyone has any major
injuries we will help.
BEA
Doc, I think my foot is falling
off.
PETE
Really? Let me look at it.
Bea's foot is raw and bloody from walking.
PETE (CONT'D)
Wow, where did you all walk from.
BEA
Brooklyn, New York Doc.
PETE
That's a long way sweetie. Just sit
right there and I'll fix you right
up.
BEA
Oh thank you Doc.
PETE
Your welcome. Anyone else need some
help.
MARIA
If you don't mind after you're
finished, could you look at the
baby? She seems fine but I'm
scared.
PETE
Of course please make yourself
comfortable.
MARIA
Thank you.
BILL
Yes, thank you very much Doctor.
PETE
Your both very welcome.
CHARLIE
Why don't we find you all a place
to stay. We've turned the hotel
into a sort of camp for the people
who's homes where destroyed. If you
all don't mind bunking, we'll find
a space for you.
HEATHER
Thank you. We would like that very
much.
GWEN
I think we should talk about this.
THOMAS
Listen Gwen, you guys can do
whatever you want but Bea can't
walk anymore today. It's gonna be
dark before we get to another town
anyway. Mr. Mayor, If you'll have
us we would love to stay.
CHARLIE
Well it's a date.
THOMAS
You'll be OK here Bea?
BILL
I'll wait till she's all bandaged
up. OK Bea?
JOHNNY
I'll stay too. We'll catch up to
you soon Tom.
Bea makes a face at Thomas about Johnny staying. Thomas
smiles to himself.
THOMAS
OK lead away Mr. Mayor.
39 EXT. HOTEL LATE AFTERNOON. 39
The Mayor is showing the group to the hotel, walking them
proudly through his tattered town.
CHARLIE
Well the name Peekskill is an old
Dutch name. Kill was what they
called the river over there and the
area was owned by Jan Peek, a fur
trader in the early 1600's. Peeks
Kill.
BRADLEY
I thought he killed Peeks.
PENNY
That was terrible. You're not even
trying now.
BRADLEY
I know.
CHARLIE
Boy, I've heard that more times
that I can count. Let me introduce
you all to the folks that are
staying here.
They all go inside the hotel.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
We don't get a lot of tourists
around here now, so we should be
able to accommodate you all.
BRADLEY
Thanks man we really appreciate
that.
CHARLIE
May, these folks are coming from
the city. You got some space for
em.
An old lady surveys the group.
MAY
Thirteen. There's a lot of you.
THOMAS
Actually there are Seventeen and a
baby.
MAY
Holy Jesus. Well I got the room but
I can't feed yas.
CHARLIE
May they just want a place to
sleep. Help them out.
MAY
Come on. We have some rooms
upstairs.
CHARLIE
Thank you May. I'll see you all
later.
MAY
Stop bringing me strays Charlie.
CHARLIE
I'll stop bringing em when they
stop coming.
Charlie leaves and May takes the group upstairs. They walk up
a dark windowless stairwell that opens up into a long hallway
with about a dozen rooms off of it.
BRADLEY
Wow, this isn't creepy.
PENNY
You just can't behave yourself can
you?
MAY
I don't know why they all set up a
road block if they are gonna let
anyone who wants walk on in. Should
have used those traitors to build a
wall I tell ya. Stack em all up.
BRADLEY
OK then.
MAY
Come on then.
SID
Excuse me.
MAY
Our bathrooms don't work either so
go in the bucket in the room.
You're gonna have to dump them
yourselves tomorrow. You better not
think this old lady's gonna clean
your shit.
SID
Ah, no I wanted to ask you about
the people on the road.
MAY
These rooms up here are free. Most
of our town's dead these days.
Those people out there are some of
the last. They might save them
wretches in the hospital but I
don't know about them either. They
should send em all out.
SID
They sent those people away.
MAY
You listen here boy.
BRADLEY
You better listen to her Sid.
MAY
Those people threw themselves out.
We let them stay just like those in
the hospital but oh no. Anyway this
is your rooms. I'm downstairs but
leave me be. There ain't anything
you need I can give you.
JUNE
This room is more than we could
have asked for.
HEATHER
Really thank you so much.
ERICA
It means a lot to us.
MAY
Fine, your welcome. Do what you
like just don't mess up my hotel.
It's all I have.
SID
Oh May.
MAY
What boy?
SID
Where do we dump our buckets?
MAY
In the sewer of course. They don't
teach you anything in those public
schools do they? They're all open,
the doors. If it you want a key
come back downstairs and I'll give
you one.
May goes back downstairs.
GWEN
That woman's a crack pot.
JUNE
That woman has us living free in
her hotel. Give her a break.
GWEN
Something isn't right about this
place.
JUNE
Well, there's locks on the doors.
That's a good start.
GWEN
Locks she has the keys to.
THOMAS
If you guys don't want to stay here
then camp out in the woods. You
have been complaining since we
started.
GWEN
I have been complaining since we
stopped. You people are keeping us
way off schedule.
SID
What, do you have a fucking meeting
lady? Give me a break.
KEITH
Hey, Gwen back off a little. We'll
find the town and everyone is going
to be fine.
BRADLEY
What's so important in this town?
JACOB
It's important we have a supply
chain or we are all dead. It just
means a lot.
GWEN
I'm sorry. I guess I am just tired.
JACOB
We'll take this room. Why don't you
three share that one.
DANIELLE
That's fine.
KEITH
I care less.
THOMAS
Bill, Maria and the baby can stay
there. June and I will take this
one. Are you two sharing a room?
JUNE
Tom!
THOMAS
What?
BRADLEY
You're asking me?
PENNY
It's fine with me.
SID
OK then we're over there.
PENNY
You and Erica are OK together.
ERICA
Of course.
Everyone goes into a room leaving the long corridor empty.
40 INT. HEATHER AND ERICA'S ROOM AFTERNOON. 40
The two women lay on their beds.
HEATHER
I can't believe we are in a bed.
ERICA
Yeah it's been along time.
HEATHER
I'm sorry.
ERICA
Why?
HEATHER
Because you'd be free. Why didn't
you go when you could?
ERICA
Was I supposed to leave you?
HEATHER
I would have.
ERICA
No you wouldn't.
HEATHER
No...but only because I don't know
what to do alone. Erica, I don't
know what to do. I can't keep
running like this. I am so afraid.
ERICA
I don't want to run anymore either.
It's all the same. It just keeps
getting worse. There is no where
safe out there anymore.
HEATHER
Maybe we can stay here?
ERICA
What about Penny and the others?
HEATHER
They have too many people to worry
about anyway. We should stay here.
We may get killed out there.
ERICA
We may get killed here. Something
isn't right about this town. No one
will talk about the people on the
road.
HEATHER
Think about it. OK.
ERICA
Why don't you go to sleep for a
bit. Then we'll look around later.
Check out this place.
HEATHER
Thank you for staying with me
Erica.
ERICA
We're roomies. Get some sleep.
Heather is asleep before Erica finishes talking. Erica lays
down and closes her eyes.
41 INT. SID AND TRACEY'S ROOM 41
Sid is on the bed and Tracey is looking around the room.
TRACEY
Why were you asking so many
questions about the road. The Mayor
said that he would tell us later.
SID
I don't know it's not everyday I
walk over a bunch of dying people.
She was trying not to answer me.
TRACEY
No she wasn't. She just forgot she
didn't tell you. My grandmother
used to do that all the time. She
would just start a story in the
middle.
SID
Like you.
TRACEY
I don't do that?
SID
Sure you don't. Make sure that door
is as locked as it can be. I want
to take a nap.
TRACEY
I checked. Why don't we stay up a
little?
SID
Oh...I might be persuaded.
TRACEY
Great, Do you like Heather and
Erica?
SID
What?
TRACEY
I was just thinking that I don't
really know much about them and
they were part of the plot to make
us slaves...
SID
If you want to stay up and talk
about those two, you are going to
have to go find May. I'm going to
take a nap now.
TRACEY
So if we were having sex you'd stay
up?
SID
Yup.
TRACEY
Ew...OK.
She jumps on Sid.
42 INT. GWEN AND JACOB'S ROOM NIGHT 42
Gwen is waking up. Jacob is at the window looking out.
GWEN
Jacob, is everything alright?
JACOB
Whether you like it or not we need
them and Gwen, if you fuck this up
I don't have to tell you what will
happen.
GWEN
No Jacob. I know.
JACOB
I know how much you care about the
village but you have to keep it
together. Everyone will be fine. We
don't have a deadline. We will get
to Haven and they will come with
us. I promise.
GWEN
How can you be so sure?
JACOB
Have I been wrong so far?
GWEN
You're right. I'm sorry. We should
get everyone together and start
cooking.
JACOB
It smells like some one is already
doing that.
GWEN
You think it's our food?
JACOB
Well we better go find out. Be cool
down there. Try to be nice.
GWEN
I will. Wow that smells great.
43 INT. HOTEL HALLWAY NIGHT. 43
The smell of food draws everyone into the hallway.
PENNY
Oh my God that smells good.
BILL
You ain't kidding.
THOMAS
You think it's May?
SID
I'm going to find out.
BRADLEY
She doesn't like you send June to
see if it's OK.
THOMAS
Yeah, she'll say it's OK if you go.
JUNE
What? Why?
THOMAS
Because you're non threatening.
BRADLEY
And you speak with great diction.
THOMAS
Yeah, you speak with great diction.
JUNE
If she says it's OK I am just going
to eat alone.
PENNY
I'll go with you.
BRADLEY
Me too.
ERICA
We're in.
HEATHER
We're in.
THOMAS
Actually I think I should go to.
GWEN
Well someone should represent us.
KEITH
Yeah It should be me.
BEA
The doctor says I can't walk bring
me something!
JUNE
Oh no. I'm going now. Alone.
PENNY
Like hell.
They all file downstairs.
44 INT. HOTEL KITCHEN NIGHT 44
May has prepared food in large pots on the stoves.
BRADLEY
You think it's people?
PENNY
It's not people.
BRADLEY
But what if it is?
GWEN
It smells great...I think I might
eat it.
THOMAS
You would.
JUNE
Be nice.
SID
May!
ALL
Shh!
May comes in from the dining room.
MAY
What the hell! You kids better not
have started eating that food. Did
you pop my pots? Did ya!
SID
Did you pop her pot Bradley?
BRADLEY
I certainly did not pop her pot and
I resent the implication.
SID
No may we did not, pop the pots but
we would really love to.
JUNE
I'm sorry about them May. Honestly
we are very hungry and were
wondering if we could eat a little.
MAY
Well, I'd say you all would eat a
lot but I made enough. Go sit in
the dining room.
JUNE
Oh thank you May. Come on guys.
The group files through the kitchen each thanking May.
45 INT. HOTEL DINING ROOM NIGHT 45
There is no one in the dining room besides the group. May
comes out with a giant pot.
MAY
Don't touch it! It's hot.
SID
What is it?
MAY
It's pumpkin and zucchini soup. I
got a lot of those out back.
THOMAS
Wow that sounds great.
MAY
There's some Apple crisp and bread
coming out too. Why don't you two
come help me.
Heather and Erica seemed surprised to be singled out.
ERICA
Oh yeah.
HEATHER
I don't know if I can help but I
will.
GWEN
I can help you.
MAY
Well, OK come on then.
The four women go into the kitchen. A moment later, about
twenty more people come into the hotel. Most of them are
badly bandaged and dirty. The town's people look at the
travelers as if they are in their dining area.
TOWNSPERSON 1
Do you mind if we sit here also?
BRIAN
Uh, I don't know if May would mind.
TOWNSPERSON 1
Oh no May feeds us everyday.
BRIAN
Oh, uh then please. It's alright.
TRACEY
I don't know if I can eat with them
looking like that.
SID
Come on Tracey. Be nice.
TRACEY
It's just so sad.
SID
Try not to make them feel bad. Just
look away.
Gwen, Heather, Erica and May come out with pies, salads and
an assortment of food.
TRACEY
Oh man.
HEATHER
The whole kitchen works in there.
TOWNSPERSON 1
Oh yeah we have a generator running
parts of the town. May's Kitchen is
a major part.
More townspeople fill the dining room. People come with trays
of food.
MAY
Just set em any old place. They'll
get eaten.
ERICA
Oh my, you weren't kidding.
MAY
Most people like to eat here still.
THOMAS
How is there so much food?
MAY
We grow some. But with most of the
town dead and the Super Savalot
over there still we have a bunch of
food.
CHARLIE
Just not a lot of help.
TOWNSPERSON 1
Yeah. There isn't a lot of us left.
SID
What happened here?
CHARLIE
This town was hit very hard. This
entire area was hit. Out west is a
waste land. After Indian point was
hit this whole area became
contaminated. This side of town was
spared but the folks across town
caught the cloud and the blast.
GWEN
Then the water on the Hudson?
CHARLIE
Yup. Can't drink it. The wells and
lake out east is fine though.
DANIELLE
But we swam it.
THOMAS
We all swam in it.
CHARLIE
Young lady. None of us are long for
this world.
MARIA
This whole place is contaminated?
THOMAS
Maria...If Indian point was hit
that night that means that the
entire city had been contaminated.
We've been walking through poison.
MARIA
No.
JUNE
Tom is this true?
SID
If the wind was blowing it South,
then we're all dead already.
JUNE
What if the wind blew East or west.
BRADLEY
Or northwest?
SID
Then we should be OK.
PETE
None of you are having symptoms of
radiation poisoning. You should all
be fine. And Stephanie is
definitely fine.
MARIA
Thank you doctor.
JUNE
Why wouldn't they tell us about the
power plant?
SID
Because that riot would have
happened the first night. With more
people.
PENNY
They were just leaving us to die.
SID
They left us to die.
THOMAS
And if we didn't leave when June
said, we'd all be dead by now.
MAY
Well you all are alive and here now
so stop ya bitching and someone say
grace.
CHARLIE
I think one of our guests should
say it. Thomas, you look like a
spiritual fellow.
THOMAS
I haven't been in a church since I
was twelve...but I will.
June is surprised.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
Our father who...
CHARLIE
Just speak from your heart Thomas.
THOMAS
God, I know I haven't talked to you
in a long time. And I haven't
thought about you except during
football games but I think this
would be a great place to start
catching up. God, I'm in great town
filled with great people, who have
opened their hearts to us. Please
bless them and this food that they
have shared with us tonight. Please
protect us from further pain and
give us the strength to go on
another day...Amen.
CHARLIE
Amen.
ALL
Amen.
CHARLIE
I couldn't have said it better
myself.
THOMAS
Thank you Charlie.
The group begin to eat. Heather and Erica seem to be very
comfortable and happy.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
Thank you for taking us in.
CHARLIE
You're welcome son. You're good
people. Well some of you are.
THOMAS
Yeah I know we took the ride with
them. They're not that bad. Just
young and stupid.
CHARLIE
Maybe not so stupid. Be careful
with those people. We've seen a lot
here since this all started.
THOMAS
Charlie. What happened to the
people on the road?
CHARLIE
Inmates.
THOMAS
What?
CHARLIE
When I became mayor ten years ago I
had a prison built. Not because we
had a crime problem mind ya. For
money. I sold this town out for
money.
TOWNSPERSON 1
That's just not true Charlie. We
all thought it was a good deal.
THOMAS
Why would having a jail here be
good.
CHARLIE
Well you see Thomas, every inmate
counts on the census.
THOMAS
As a towns person?
CHARLIE
Yes, and the town receives federal
aid based on that census number.
The more people the more money. And
since these people lived on a fixed
income...you get the picture.
THOMAS
So those people raised the town
budget.
CHARLIE
Yes. It was a common practice that
I never saw the problem with until
that night. Two of the three
satellites that hit this town hit
the jail.
FLASHBACK
46 EXT. JAIL NIGHT 46
The jail cell sits quietly until the sky is lit by fireballs.
Two hit the jail in quick succession. Fire and fragments
spread on impact.
47 INT. JAIL NIGHT 47
Chaos spread through the jail. Guards are running out of the
jail.
CHARLIE
At first they dealt with the
explosion like any other fire.
Evacuate the prisoners that were in
danger and focus on the fire. Only
the fire spread quick. Really
quick.
Prisoners are screaming and pleading for anyone to help them
out of their cells before the fires get to them.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
Hundreds of people lost their lives
to the fire. They turned out to be
the lucky ones.
The jail is filled with people dying of radiation poisoning.
The side of town that was hit is engulfed in explosions and
fires.
END FLASH BACK
48 INT. HOTEL DINING ROOM NIGHT 48
CHARLIE
Everything and everyone were
radiated and had to be quarantined.
That included the prisoners and the
people from the other side of town.
But it left them stuck on the other
side of town with the entire
prison.
PENNY
What happened to them?
CHARLIE
We were able to save some of the
children who started running but
after the first week they stopped
coming.
GWEN
Have you all gone over there.
CHARLIE
The town is too contaminated.
THOMAS
So the people on the road...
CHARLIE
Are survivors who tried to come
over. Son, I'm seventy two years
old. Lived a life of no
regrets...but leaving those people
out there to die is the hardest
thing I have ever had to keep
doing, and to save this town I
will.
TOWNSPERSON 1
We all will.
THOMAS
You made a tough decision and no
one will fault you for that.
CHARLIE
No son...they will. Someone always
will.
Thomas and Charlie eat in silence for the rest of the meal.
ERICA
May?
MAY
Yes Dear.
ERICA
I was, well we were...
MAY
Spit it out, my food is getting
cold.
ERICA
We were wondering if we could stay
with you? Here.
HEATHER
That's me and Erica.
Gwen looks at Jacob who tries to calm her.
MAY
If you two are gonna be here you
are gonna have to help me with this
place.
HEATHER
We'd love to. Thank you May.
ERICA
I'm sorry guys but we can't keep
going. I'm afraid things are going
to get worse for us as we go on.
JUNE
It's perfectly fine. Don't feel
bad. I think this is a great place
to stay.
GWEN
We really could use your help on
the road.
ERICA
We are more of a burden than a
help.
GWEN
I'm going to rest up for tomorrow.
Gwen leaves the dining room. Jacob looks around and is upset.
JACOB
I'd better go check on her.
Danielle, Brian and Keith notice everything and are
unsettled.
CHARLIE
As I was saying, be careful.
THOMAS
I will.
DAY 14
49 EXT. PEEKSKILL TOWN CENTER DAY 49
The group is ready to continue on upstate, minus two people.
Heather and Erica are hugging the women from Brooklyn Good
bye. Thomas shakes Charlie's hand and they all walk on. Gwen
and Jacob seem different than the other Croton travelers.
They both seem somber.
HEATHER
Thank you all for your help.
PENNY
Don't worry about it. Just take
care of yourself.
HEATHER
We will.
GWEN
We should get going.
THOMAS
Too early Gwen.
50 EXT. HIGHWAY DAY 50
The travelers are walking in a straight line.
THOMAS
I don't know why you're moving so
fast.
GWEN
You guys are gonna stay wherever
you want. We have to get back to
our friends and family.
THOMAS
I'm grateful that you wanted to
show us this place but you have
been making a bad scene worse.
GWEN
Get your priorities together. If I
can make anything worse in this
fucked up world, then you aren't
thinking right. Look around Thomas.
There is nothing left. Food,
shelter and not getting killed is
all we have now. So if you want to
eat or stay alive keep up with me.
If you people want to leave then
leave but I am going to Haven and
then going back to Croton.
THOMAS
You know, we were doing better on
our on anyway.
JACOB
Tom, please...we are safer in
numbers. We need you as much as you
need us. You guys have a baby and
Bea. We are stronger together. If
anyone needs a break today we stop.
I promise.
THOMAS
Thank you Jacob.
BEA
Hey guys hold up!
THOMAS
I guess we'll be talking that
break.
JACOB
Of course.
THOMAS
Listen Gwen, I understand about
your friends. I am sorry.
GWEN
Thank you, I'm just frustrated.
THOMAS
We all are. Hey Bea, you OK?
BEA
Yeah, just need to tinkle.
THOMAS
Oh...OK Bea, hurry up though OK?
Tom smiles at Gwen.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
June, you want to take a walk?
JUNE
I'm fine. Gonna just hang.
Bea walks over to a series of bushes.
BEA
I'm gonna be back here.
As she is saying this she slips past the bushes. The bushes
were hiding a steep drop that Bea falls down.
JOHNNY
Ma!
THOMAS
Bea!
BRADLEY
Hurry we have to get to her. Bea
we're coming.
Bea is about twelve feet under the group who quickly get to
her.
JOHNNY
Ma are you OK?
BEA
I broke my leg John.
JOHNNY
You sure?
BEA
The bone is sicking out of my
fucking leg!
BRADLEY
Bea, what did you do? Oh no this is
so bad.
PENNY
We're too far from the town to make
it back.
BEA
Oh, I'm gonna make it. Sorry to
hold you up guys.
JOHNNY
What are we gonna do? What are we
gonna do? Oh...Oh.
Suddenly Johnny's head explodes, spreading blood everywhere.
SID
Holy shit!
BEA
My Baby!
BRADLEY
What the fuck? What happened?
JACOB
Someone is shooting at us!
SID
Get out of here.
THOMAS
No! Help us with Bea!
A shot hits Bea in the head also.
JACOB
Run for the forest if you want to
live!
The people scatter. Thomas and June are running through the
woods. Thomas looks back to see Bill and the baby. Thomas
runs into a net.
THOMAS
What the fuck! Watch for nets! Guys
watch the net!
JUNE
Help us! Tom is stuck!
People are moving behind the trees.
JACOB
They stopped shooting.
GWEN
They are herding us. Don't stop
running!
JACOB
Maybe they're out of bullets?
JUNE
Help!
KEITH
We should help.
GWEN
Move!
The Croton group continues running as Bradley and Sid try to
get Thomas out.
THOMAS
Go! Get June out of here.
Bill stops with the baby to look back.
BRADLEY
Stay still! You're making it
harder!
MARIA
No! We have to keep going!
BILL
Take the baby!
MARIA
No! You have to stay with us!
Maria is holding on to Bill, trying to pull him away.
MARIA (CONT'D)
They shot her! They shot Bea!
BILL
Take Stephanie!
MARIA
No! You can't go back! Come on!
Maria runs.
BILL
Take her!
MARIA
No!
BILL
Take her! Now! They're getting
close.
MARIA
No We have to run.
Bill goes back with Stephanie.
THOMAS
Go! June go!
JUNE
You're almost out. Hurry they're
coming!
They get Thomas out and keep running but are pounced on by
the people who are chasing them. Others are taking Johnny and
Bea's bodies away.
JUNE (CONT'D)
They're taking the bodies!
BRADLEY
They're hunting for food!
THOMAS
June run now!
June starts to back away but is grabbed by another person.
June kicks his chins and scrapes his face with her nails.
Bill is circled by people. He is holding on to the baby.
Bradley and Sid run and tackle those people, allowing Bill to
run by, covering the baby.
Thomas, Bradley and Sid are fighting off the closest people.
THOMAS (CONT'D)
Get out of here with the baby.
Bill gives June the baby and pushes her away.
BILL
Go with Maria and Tracey!
As he says this Sid, Thomas and Bradley run and pull him with
them. They all run.
SID
Split up!
Bill, Thomas, June and the baby run to one side while Tracey,
Sid, Penny and Bradley catch up to the Croton group.
GWEN
Where's Thomas?
BRADLEY
What do you fucking care? How could
you leave us like that!
JACOB
We thought you were running too.
KEITH
I'm sorry man.
JACOB
We should go back for them.
KEITH
No the women should stay.
BRIAN
We all stay together now.
MARIA
I can't go back!
BRADLEY
Your baby and husband are there.
Maria is frozen in fear.
GWEN
She'll be a liability. Stay with
her Penny!
PENNY
Hurry go!
BRADLEY
Stay here!
PENNY
Just go!
They run back towards Thomas, Bill and June. From out of a
clearing they see the fight.
GWEN
I think they're out of ammo!
Gwen heads the point and attacks the people on Thomas. The
attackers out number the travelers.
BRADLEY
June, Run for the clearing with the
baby! The others are there.
JUNE
Tom! Come on!
THOMAS
June go! Please save her go!
BILL
Please June!
June starts to run. A man gets in her way. June kicks his
knee cap backwards then runs over him. The man grabs her leg
making her fall. She twists to protect the baby but hits the
floor. June is kicking at the face of the man who let's go of
his grip. June takes off with Stephanie. An attacker with a
rifle points at June and Fires.
Everything stops.
June stops. She pulls the baby away from her chest. The baby
is bleeding. June's hands are filled with blood. She then
notices she is shot through the chest. The bullet went thru
her and Stephanie. June falls.
BILL (CONT'D)
Stephanie!
Thomas pulls free and tackles the man who shot her. He rips
the gun from his hands and shoves it through his teeth then
fires. Nothing happens. The bullet that shot June and the
baby was the last bullet. Thomas Rams the riffle through the
back of the mans head. He then pulls it out and starts
swinging it at the attackers. He cracks the skulls of anyone
in sight. The others keep fighting the attackers until they
drive them away.
Thomas walks over to the bodies of Stephanie and the baby. He
holds June's lifeless body and begins to sob. Bill walks up
behind him.
BILL (CONT'D)
Stephie? Oh no. No. No!
The others stand behind them as the brothers sob over their
lost family.
GWEN
We should...
BRADLEY
Finish that sentence and I will
kill you where you stand.
SID
We leave when they leave.
The sky above is clear and beautiful and bright. Tracey
watches from the other side of the trees, waiting either to
run or welcome their friends back. Tracey realizes Thomas is
carrying June and Bill is carrying the baby.
PENNY
Oh my god!
MARIA
My Baby! My Baby! No!
They stop in a field standing guard as others dig a grave for
June and the baby Stephanie. After they are done they keep
walking.
PENNY
What do we do now?
BRADLEY
We keep going.
They keep walking.
ACT III
HAVEN,THE CATSKILLS
51 EXT. HAVEN TOWN CENTER DUSK 51
They reach the town and see that it is alive with movement.
PENNY
It's Haven.
DANIELLE
We're here.
Children are playing and old people are in front of their
houses. People are waving at them.
TRACEY
Do they know what happened?
Thomas see a young woman named Sage who brings him a basket
of pears that he accepts with out a word.
SAGE
There's enough food for you all.
TRACEY
Thank you.
A man in a reverend's collar walks up to them.
REVEREND
Welcome travelers. The Lord has
brought you to us. This is Haven
and I am the Reverend. This young
lady is Sage. She will show you all
around.
GWEN
Thank you Reverend. We are from
Croton. We would like to speak with
you about setting up a barter
system with our camp this winter.
REVEREND
We would love to speak with you. It
will be the goodness of god fearing
folks that will see us all through
this. Please walk with me.
BRADLEY
She didn't waste anytime.
PENNY
The sooner she makes her deal the
sooner we are rid of her.
GWEN
Thank you. Why don't you all stay
with the Brooklyn kids. Jacob come
with me.
KEITH
OK.
REVEREND
Please, we are preparing dinner in
the town hall right now. Why don't
you all make your way over to there
first. I'm sure you are all hungry.
BILL
Thank you. We would love to eat.
REVEREND
Well you are more than welcome.
Sage please show our guests to town
hall.
SAGE
Of course.
Sage and the others walk towards the town center while Gwen
and Jacob go with the Reverend.
BRADLEY
So you guys don't look like you got
hit.
SAGE
This town suffered a terrible loss.
As they turn the corner, A shell of a factory is seen in the
distance.
BRADLEY
Oh my.
SID
What happened?
SAGE
The factory was the income for this
town. Haven produce. You know them?
SID
Of course.
SAGE
We all worked there. Whoever didn't
die in the fire, died from
radioactive shrapnel in their
bodies. So now it's just us.
PENNY
Who's us?
SAGE
Well the kids, the doctors anyone
who didn't work in the factory that
night. Most people at least had a
shift there but there's a few of
us.
PENNY
How come everything looks so good.
No where else looks like this.
SAGE
Well we have a lot of food and
farms. The hospitals are the same.
Reverend was always the Mayor.
TRACEY
Talk about separation.
SID
Shh. You're the only Jew in the
whole town.
TRACEY
I think I'm as safe as Bill and
Thomas.
They walk into the town hall.
52 INT. TOWN HALL NIGHT 52
They come into the room and join the food line. Everyone is
very friendly. The Reverend comes back with Gwen and Jacob.
Everyone is eating and laughing. Thomas refuses the stew.
BILL
He's a vegetarian.
FOOD SERVER
He's a dick.
Thomas looks up at the server who back away. The little kids
get their food and are taken to another dining hall to eat.
Sage sees the children leave and walks over to Thomas. The
Reverend shakes Gwen and Jacob's hands and they leave. Keith
sees this and whispers to the remaining Croton members.
Moments after Keith, Brian and Danielle get up and try to run
but are grabbed by towns people.
SAGE
Get your friends out of here
Thomas looks up then puts his hand on Bill's shoulder, then
motions for them to leave. The Brooklyn group sees this and
try to back away but are surrounded by the towns people. Sage
cowers in the back with a few others.
SAGE (CONT'D)
I'm sorry.
REVEREND
I am afraid your friends have made
a deal for your town.
You are to stay here with us for
the duration of the winter. You
will be free to leave once the
ground is plowed in the spring.
BRIAN
No, it was them not us.
BRADLEY
What?
DANIELLE
We're with them.
REVEREND
Until the three from Brooklyn died.
You will be taking their place.
KEITH
No.
SID
You fucking traded us! You fucking
scumbags! I'll kill you all.
REVEREND
I do apologize. But we have a town
filled with children to feed and
three farms that have no workers.
You help us. We will keep you
alive. If not...
He looks at the stew.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
53 Either way you will keep us alive. 53
Take them to their quarters.
.
54 EXT. STORAGE FACILITY NIGHT 54
The building houses hundred of storage containers that are
now prisons for travelers unfortunate enough to pass through
Haven. The group is separated and placed in detention rooms,
four each. Tracey, Penny and Maria are in a cell with a woman
name Clovis.
TRACEY
SID!
GUARD
Get in!
He pushes Tracey inside and closes the cell door. They walk
Bradley, Sid, Bill and Thomas further down the hall.
GUARD (CONT'D)
There's room for three more in
there.
Inside a cell is Philip, a small Latin man. They go in but
they stop Thomas.
GUARD (CONT'D)
Not you. Put this one with them
down the hall.
GUARD 2
Do you think that is a good idea.
GUARD
Whatever. More for us.
55 INT. PRISON CELL. NIGHT 55
Thomas is placed together with Keith, Brian and Danielle the
people from Croton. The rooms are dusty and cold. Two buckets
are in the corners of the room. There are no windows but one
light. On the floor are old blankets and sheets.
BRAIN
You have to understand man. We had
no choice.
KEITH
We had a choice and we got fucked.
BRAIN
You're not making this better man!
KEITH
Why bother. If he kills us in our
sleep it's our fault.
BRAIN
Thomas. I liked you man. I helped
you back there.
Thomas goes and lays on a blanket. He closes his eyes and
goes to sleep.
Later that night Thomas's eyes open to the sound of piss
hitting the bucket. Brian is relieving himself.
The others are asleep. Brian finished and turns to find
Thomas right behind him.
BRIAN
Dude...you scared me. Sorry man.
Wow. I didn't even hear you.
Thomas walks past him and urinates in the bucket.
BRAIN
So again I'm sorry man, you know
for everything. Oh you probably
just want to piss and go back to
sleep. We'll talk tomorrow.
Brian turns and Thomas stops urinating. Brian turns around to
see Thomas a foot away from his face.
BRIAN
Tom?
Thomas grabs his lower jaw and pulls it open as he brings
Brian closer to him. Brian is trying to speak but Thomas'
hand and terror take his words. Thomas looks into Brian's
eyes and breaks his jaw, ripping his face. Keith wakes up to
try and help his colleague but it is too late.
KEITH
Mother Fucker!
Keith runs toward Thomas who stands back and steps on Brian's
face until he is dead. Thomas stiffens his arm and drops
Keith as he approaches him. Thomas then falls to his knees,
on to Keith's shoulders. He then shoves his arm into Keith's
mouth. As he chokes Keith Thomas watches Danielle who is
screaming hysterically and pounding the doors. Danielle
realizes her screams cannot be heard through the thick
storage doors. She stops and slowly turns to Thomas who is
still staring at her. When Thomas finishes with Keith, he
goes to lay down leaving Danielle terrified.
DANIELLE
Is that it? Are you going to kill
me?
Thomas is just laying there.
DANIELLE (CONT'D)
Please, you don't have to do
this...can you hear me? Please
don't do this...Why won't you
answer me. Answer me...don't just
fucking lay there.
Why won't you do anything... You
don't think I am going to kill you
for this!
Thomas lays there.
DANIELLE (CONT'D)
I'll fucking kill you!
Thomas closes his eyes.
DAY 15
56 INT. PRISON CELL. DAY 56
Danielle is in the very same position that she was in the
night before. The room is covered in the blood that drained
from Keith and Brian's body. The door opens and the guards
look at Danielle then go over a drag Thomas out of the cell
through the blood.
57 INT. BUTCHER ROOM DAY 57
The room is pitch black. We can see Thomas waking up through
a crack of light from the door. Thomas can hear crying and
whimpering in the room. The lights come on and knives are all
over the bloody wall. Thomas is chained to a chair. In front
of Thomas is Danielle who seems very scared. She sees the
knives and pees herself. The Reverend and a butcher comes
into the room and pulls a carving knife off the wall. He
slices Thomas' arm as he passes him.
DANIELLE
Oh god!!! Help me!
Danielle cries and screams hysterically. The butcher cuts of
the woman's scalp and throws it in a corner. She wails. He
then starts cutting off her leg while she screams. Her leg
takes four swings before it is loose. Blood spatters all over
Thomas. The Reverend looks at Thomas but is surprised there
is no reaction. Not anger or fear...nothing. As if he is
watching the rain on grass. The butcher prepares the leg as
if to sell in a deli. He hands the leg to the Reverend.
REVEREND
Your little stunt made me miss my
breakfast. A bit uncivilized but
adequate. Thank you young lady.
Your sacrifice with not go
unnoticed in heaven.
The butcher continues to cut pieces of the woman off while
Thomas watches. She remains alive throughout the entire
conversation.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
You and your friends can make it
out of here if you obey. You obey
and you live. People who can not
pull their weight will help our
town one way or another.
In between cuts he prepares and hangs the meat to bleed. The
woman can see her body being hung.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
These people you so misguidedly
followed could not be trusted in
our society. Anyone willing to sell
their own can not be trusted. She
sold you and your friends for
supplies that will never make it to
their town. Although I believe her
too be to tough to digest.
Danielle looks at her legless armless body. The Reverend
comes close to Thomas and speaks into his ear.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
I know you understand the situation
here. You were allowed your
revenge, now I expect for you to do
all I ask of you. If you do your
friends will live. Young lady you
make a noble sacrifice. May the
lord accept your soul into eternal
paradise. Good bye.
The Reverend walks out. After a few hours Thomas is staring
at a head on a carcass in front of him. Thomas watches as the
butcher walks towards him with the cleaver. Thomas lets his
eyes drop. He walks past Thomas and hangs the cleaver on the
wall, then turns out the light and walks out.
58 EXT. STORAGE FACILITY DAY 58
Bradley, Sid, Bill, Penny, and Tracy are lined up with other
prisoners in a parking lot behind the facility. Guards with
shot guns are around the perimeter.
GUARD
This is roll call. It happens every
morning and night.
If you are not here for roll call
your roommates will die. Each day
you will go to a farm and do what
you are told. That evening you will
be brought back to eat. You will
eat then go to your cell. If you
divert from this path you will be
killed. If you fight with each
other you will be killed. If you
attack a guard you will be killed.
If you do anything that I did not
tell you to do you will be killed.
Line up!
The prisoners line up and walk towards a dirt road.
59 EXT. FARM DAY 59
The prisoners are marched down a dirt road towards an
orchard. They are given baskets.
GUARD
Take these baskets and fill them.
When it is full, empty the baskets
in this wagon. You should have one
basket full every half hour. Now
get to work.
BRADLEY
I can't believe I'm a slave.
BILL
You can't believe it. Try being
black. This is terrible.
BRADLEY
Where do you think Tom is?
BILL
I've been trying not to think about
it.
SID
The other Croton people aren't here
either.
BRADLEY
You don't think he left with them.
BILL
They didn't leave and he wouldn't.
BRADLEY
Yeah you're right, he wouldn't but
where is he?
SID
Missing all the fun.
PHILIP
Hey I heard your friend killed the
other people in his room. They beat
him up pretty bad. They probably
have him in the hospital.
SID
How'd you hear that?
PHILIP
I have some contacts in here.
BRADLEY
How long you been here?
PHILIP
Two weeks.
A commotion is heard. A teenaged boy is caught eating an
apple. His hand is cut off on the field and tar is poured
over the stump then soaked in water. The boy is forced to
work again.
BRADLEY
Guess I shouldn't eat an apple.
SID
Guess not.
60 EXT. ORCHARD DUSK 60
The guards herd up the prisoners and march them down the dirt
road back to the storage facility.
61 INT. STORAGE FACILITY NIGHT 61
Tracey, Penny and Maria are in their cell with Clovis.
CLOVIS
I was trying to get downstate to my
family in Yonkers. They caught us
on the parkway.
PENNY
How many of you were there?
CLOVIS
There were seven of us. My husband
my two sisters and their husbands
and the baby.
Maria starts sobbing in the corner.
PENNY
She lost her baby.
CLOVIS
I'm so sorry dear. But I told
myself, when I lost my baby...this
world is too wicked for her. She's
with God now sweetheart. They can't
hurt her now. Not like this place.
TRACEY
I was not meant to work like this.
CLOVIS
Honey be thankful when you are
working. It's when you aren't
working that's the problem.
PENNY
What do you mean?
CLOVIS
When the Reverend calls for you, it
ain't for confession.
TRACEY
What do you mean calls for you?
CLOVIS
They take the women to him at
night. And not only him...They have
a whole stable set up for us.
TRACEY
You got to be kidding me.
CLOVIS
They come for you in hoods at night
and cover your head with a sack.
The women are terrified.
CLOVIS (CONT'D)
When they took off the hoods they
had us all in a locker room. They
opened hoses on us and made us
clean ourselves.
Then they marched us single file
past them as they watched
us...right into that stable.
PENNY
What's the stable?
CLOVIS
They chain us like horses. They
close a wooden box around your head
and chain our heads and our arms to
a beam in the center of the
room...for them to use.
PENNY
Who?
CLOVIS
All of them. All of them. They all
do it. Under masks but they all do
it.
TRACEY
If you do what?
CLOVIS
If you are a woman and have a pussy
or an ass or any fucking hole they
can find. I've heard they even
bring the children there. But they
don't come back.
The doors open and Penny is taken.
PENNY
No! No! Get the fuck off me!
The other women sit in terror. The door slams shut.
62 INT. HIGH SCHOOL NIGHT 62
Penny is taken into a locker room with four other women. They
are all marched into the showers with sacks on their heads.
HOODED MAN 1
Take your clothes off.
The women cry.
HOODED MAN 1 (CONT'D)
Take them off...Now!
They are forced to take off their clothes and hear a
generator start.
HOODED MAN 2
Take off the hoods too.
They do so.
PENNY
Oh my god no.
Penny sees the group of men in hoods holding candles. A
moment later cold water is sprayed all over the women who are
screaming.
HOODED MAN 1
Turn around and spread your ass!
Now! Move it!
They slowly do as they are told. They are marched into a
gymnasium lit only by candle light. Slowly across the room
candles are lit one by one. They can see a group of teenaged
men all holding candles.
HOODED MAN 1 (CONT'D)
We have two hours men! Happy
hunting! 10-9-8-
The count down makes the women terrified. They huddle
together.
HOODED MAN 1 (CONT'D)
7-6-5-4-
With each passing number the men get more a more wild.
HOODED MAN 1 (CONT'D)
3-2-1
A door is opened behind the women and the men with candles
start to run towards them. Penny takes off out the door
followed by most of the women. One woman falls and is pounced
on by multiple men who are grabbing at her violently. The
other women can hear her screaming behind them.
The three women run through the dark school blindly.
PENNY
We have to split up or they will
find us all.
The others are too scared to leave. Penny keeps going with
them behind her.
A man appears in front of Penny but doesn't catch her.
Instead, him and two others pounce on the woman behind Penny.
Penny drags the other woman and keeps running. They hear
people and hide.
Penny is forced to almost suffocate the other woman with her
to keep her quiet while they pass. Penny then runs leaving
the woman alone.
SCARED WOMAN
Don't leave me! Please, Please
don't leave me!
Candles start to appear in the darkness behind the screaming
woman. She turns and sees them.
SCARED WOMAN (CONT'D)
Please, don't do this. You don't
have to. Please.
They close in on her.
Penny is in a back stairwell. She can hear random screams and
hoots of praise and joy.
Penny sits in a corner for a moment and starts to cry
hysterically. She can not see anyway out of this. A candle is
appearing in the distance behind Penny. She can not see it.
HOODED MAN 3
I found one!
Penny Jumps up and hits the man in the face breaking his nose
into his brain. Penny takes the candle and runs.
She finds an open Janitors closest and hides inside it. She
can hear the men outside.
HOODED MAN 1
Holy shit! You killed him! You
fucking bitch! You are going to
pray that we kill you.
HOODED MAN 2
But we won't! Do you know what we
are going to do? Every had a cattle
prod up your ass. Well you will
bitch! You hear me!
One of the men see Penny's candle light from under the door.
HOODED MAN 1
We will find you!
Penny is terrified. Penny can see their feet stop from under
the door. She blows out the candle but it is too late as
they force the door open.
HOODED MAN 2
Walk out here.
PENNY
Fuck you!
HOODED MAN 2
If you don't come out here we will
burn you in there. Go get the gas.
PENNY
No!
They make Penny walk to them. As she nears them they begin to
shock her with the cattle prod.
She screams and falls in agony. A man jumps on top of her and
flips her to her stomach. Others hold her arms and legs while
still other shock her.
HOODED MAN 2
Woo hoo! I can feel the jolt!
The candles of the men watching are reflected in Penny's
eyes. The men bring the dead body of the man Penny killed.
HOODED MAN 1
This was gonna be his first time.
It still will be. You hear me
cunt. Fuck him.
PENNY
No.
They continue to torture Penny. They make her have sex with
the dead man's body while they laugh and prod her.
HOODED MAN 1
Fuck him harder!
FADE TO BLACK.
63 INT. STORAGE FACILITY NIGHT 63
Back in the Brooklyn men's cell. Sid, Bill and Bradley talk
to Philip.
PHILIP
I lived in Bethel, it's about ten
miles away. Two weeks ago they
came and took twenty women and
their children.
SID
Who came?
PHILIP
These people. They wanted forty
healthy men from twenty to forty in
return for the women. Five at a
time in return for their women,
their children and twenty barrels
of grain. What could we do? The
men who's wives and kids were here
came to Haven. Five went Five came
back. Mostly children. Finally when
the final five men left the town,
the other men followed from a
distance to attack and save their
town. No one from Haven ever came
to meet those five.
SID
Oh man, Once the men were far
enough away others from Haven
attacked the town?
PHILIP
They Killed everyone they saw. All
the children and elderly were
slaughtered. The other women
enslaved and taken.
SID
Is the entire town here?
PHILIP
If they haven't died most are still
here.
BRADLEY
How'd they all die?
PHILIP
This town loved sports and hunting
they still love both.
64 INT. BUTCHER ROOM NIGHT 64
Thomas is still sitting in the butchery. The door opens and
he closes his eyes. A figure enters. Time passes and Thomas
hears nothing. He opens his eyes to see Sage looking at him.
SAGE
I am sorry about this. I want to
help you. I know you don't believe
me and probably want to kill me but
you need me. I can keep you alive
but you have to trust me.
Thomas looks up at her.
SAGE (CONT'D)
OK just do what I say. You aren't
going into general population. The
Croton trader told the Reverend
that you were their group leader.
He is going to kill you. You are
only alive for his games. I have to
clean your wounds now.
She cleans Thomas' wounds. Then gives him something to drink.
SAGE (CONT'D)
Trust me. I know you don't want to
but you have no choice.
Thomas become drowsy. Sage fades away from his sight to be
replaced by two townsmen who drag his limp body out of the
room.
65 EXT. TOWN BAR NIGHT 65
The guards are dragging Thomas to the bar.
66 INT. TOWN BAR NIGHT 66
Thomas is thrown into a metal cage with barbed wire on the
top. He can hardly maintain his own weight. There is saw dust
on the floor of the fenced cage. Two men come in.
FIGHTER 1
You think you can take us! I ain't
afraid of a big Nigger!
FIGHTER 2
I'm gonna buss your big black ass!
They timidly test Thomas' strength. Thomas gets a few good
hits in scaring and exciting the audience. But quickly he is
no match for them and they pummel him.
The Reverend looks at Sage as he leaves the fight
disappointed.
REVEREND
Next time I ask for a fighter I
expect one in good condition.
The fight is stopped and the two boys leave the ring with
Thomas in a pool of blood.
67 INT. HOSPITAL NIGHT 67
Thomas is placed in a hospital to tend to his wounds. Sage is
the nurse in charge. Sage is comfortable at the clinic and is
different and more confident and talkative.
SAGE
OK so now you wont ever trust me
right. No, wrong, you are alive
much longer than you would have
been on your own. A bit rough
around the edges but alive. And now
we have tons of time to talk about
our plans. That's right. I have a
master plan for us.
Thomas is forced to really look at this woman. She has broken
Thomas' wall.
SAGE (CONT'D)
Wow that's a real look. You looked
at me. I'm getting to you. I knew I
would. They're was something about
you that said you were the one to
help. So I wondered how I could get
to talk to you alone. I thought
maybe at dinner but that bitch
totally sold you guys out quick. So
I figured you look strong maybe if
you get to fight you will get hurt
and come here and look where you
are. Here. So now that you are
here, let's talk.
Thomas almost forgets how much pain he is in.
SAGE (CONT'D)
We are the most important link in
the rebellion, you and me. There's
a bunch of us too. Even some of the
people that grabbed you guys. They
want to get rid of the reverend.
Listen I know you are still mad but
if I didn't drug you, you would
have killed those two and the
Reverend would have killed you.
Thomas gets it.
SAGE (CONT'D)
We're safe here. Most people just
leave me be in here. Wacky nurse.
Well anyway most of the people
working here are on our side. Can
you help us?
Thomas smiles.
SAGE (CONT'D)
Good.
DAY 16
68 EXT. ORCHARD DAY 68
Sid and Bradley are hauling apples again.
BRADLEY
I can't do this all winter. My knee
is going to give out.
SID
I've been thinking about getting
out of here but there are a lot of
problems.
BRADLEY
Yeah like the armed guards.
SID
Well like that. We don't know how
armed they are. They may be holding
empty guns.
BRADLEY
True. But I don't want to test
that.
SID
True.
BILL
I want to get out of here but what
about Thomas and the girls.
SID
Thomas could be dead but we have to
find the women.
BILL
If we do anything we have to free
ourselves and whatever men we can
and build an army.
BRADLEY
What if they kill the women because
we left?
BILL
That's a real concern.
SID
The women would be there insurance
against us. It wouldn't be in their
better interest to kill them.
PHILIP
You all need to be less noticeable
about your planning. But if you are
serious, there are about twenty men
that would help.
SID
Can you be sure of them?
PHILIP
Yes.
SID
We should take the armed guards in
a sudden effort and use them as
hostages to get our people back.
Once we do we can use some hostages
to get us far enough away from this
place.
BILL
I think this is great but I think
Thomas is still alive.
SID
There hasn't been any news of him
since he killed the Croton people.
BILL
I know but if he is still alive.
SID
We are only going to get weaker as
we live here. This is our best
chance.
BILL
We should demand Thomas back.
BRADLEY
Of course.
BILL
OK. I'm in.
SID
Philip get your people along with
this.
Through out the day whispers pass between slaves. As the day
ends and the guards round up the slaves, each slave nearest
the guards know their purpose.
As they walk towards the camp. An old man falls from
exhaustion.
GUARD
Stand up old man!
The man can not get up.
GUARD (CONT'D)
Get up or they'll be eating you
tonight.
One of the two middle guards comes to see what is happening.
Sid, Bill and Bradley seem as if this was not part of the
plan.
GUARD 2
What's going on here?
GUARD
This one's useless. Get the fuck
up!
They poke at him with the gun.
PRISONER 1
Leave him. We can carry him.
GUARD
Who the fuck asked you?
GUARD 2
Get back in line or you'll regret
this.
While they argue with the Prisoner, the old man on the floor,
gets up and pushes one of the guns out of the range of
anyone. The gun goes off, causing the other guard to look
over. Each guard is rushed and over powered. The slaves end
up with guns but before Sid can say anything they start to
kill the guards.
SID
No! We need them! With out hostages
we have nothing.
PRISONER 1
Not this one, this one dies. He
raped and killed my daughter. I
kill this one and then I leave.
SID
We need you and him.
PRISONER 1
No way man. I ain't part of your
fight. I'm free now. I ain't going
back there. I don't care what you
say. I ain't.
SID
We need hostages.
Another prisoner kills another guard.
PRISONER 2
I say we've been here longer and we
want to kill them.
He shoots another guard.
SID
You are killing us all.
Prisoner 1 kills the first guard.
BRADLEY
Holy shit.
PRISONER 1
I'm sorry. It was my little girl.
Bradley has his gun on a guard.
GUARD
Your riots' falling apart.
BRADLEY
If you haven't realized the only
part that is going wrong is the
keeping you alive part. Now shut
the fuck up before I walk away from
you.
SID
No Brad we need him he's all we
have.
PHILIP
Sid, let's just go back to our
town. Raise an army. Then come
back.
SID
They may be dead by then. We killed
a lot of them. They need an example
to stop another riot. They can not
stop it with out sacrifices. We
just killed the women if we don't
figure out a way to save them.
PRISONER 1
We're leaving.
SID
At least give us the guns.
PRISONER 1
We will need them.
SID
Phillip.
PHILIP
Come with us.
SID
Phil, you're leaving?
Philip thinks about it.
PHILIP
No, I will help you.
PRISONER 1
It's your funeral Phil.
PHILIP
I know. But they killed Doris. I
owe her. You all have a debt to
collect.
PRISONER 1
I can't collect anything dead and
that town is death.
After the rioters leave, Bill, Bradley, Sid and Phillip are
with two shot guns, five other slaves and a guard. On the
road are three dead guards.
BILL
We're fucked.
BRADLEY
What if we said that they rioted
and fled but we returned. We'd have
to kill this prick first though.
SID
We still may have a chance with
this guard. We can say the others
are being held in the woods.
The guard laughs at them.
GUARD
You think the Reverend is going to
give two shit what happens to me?
You people might as well run.
BRADLEY
He's right he's useless.
Bradley shoots the guard dead.
SID
Now what?
BRADLEY
We go to the other farm.
BILL
They're more guards there.
PHILIP
Four to be exact.
BRADLEY
Well let's hope some one there has
balls.
PHILIP
You Brooklyn boys are crazy.
69 EXT. SECOND ORCHARD DUSK 69
When they get there they see the guards waiting for the other
slaves and guards to meet them.
BILL
If we try to flank them it will
take too long and they'll know
something is wrong.
BRADLEY
Listen our best bet is just to go
full out.
SID
OK Bill and Phillip stay behind me
and Brad until you gets guns.
They make their way as close as they can and Sid shoots the
guard who was standing alone.
BRADLEY
Go get his gun. I got you!
Bill runs for the fallen guard's gun.
GUARD
Get on the floor! All of you on the
floor!
As he says this he is shot in the side of the face. The
slaves start running wild.
Philip picks up a shot gun. Slaves are being shot in the
cross fire.
The gunshots are heard from the town. A group of armed gunmen
head to the riot. The group have gotten down two of the four
guards here but the others have blocked themselves behind a
turned cart.
GUARD (CONT'D)
Get up in front!
He grabs a prisoner woman and throws her in front of the
cart.
SID
Stop don't shoot her! Get up! There
are only two of them and twenty of
you. They can not win!
The other slaves are realizing.
SID (CONT'D)
Join us we did already! By tonight
we will have the camp!
A guard shoots one of the slave women in the back of the head
to prove he is not joking.
SID (CONT'D)
I'll kill anyone who comes near us.
Get out there.
He sends two more women out in front.
SID (CONT'D)
We're gonna get these people
killed.
Suddenly a group of slave men Rush the guards hiding behind
the women.
The others join them and the slaves are free until they
notice the armed men coming from town.
PHILIP
Forget this man! We did it! Let
just run! Kill them and run!
Again more than half of the freed slaves run for their lives.
SID
No! Fuck!
BRADLEY
They're coming Sid. We don't have
enough people.
Bill shoots both of the guards.
BILL
It wont work. They are all too
beaten. We tell them that we were
forced to march here as shields and
the other who ran started the riot.
We have no choice. It's that or
run.
BRADLEY
Dude we may have to run.
PHILIP
Drop the guns get on the floor man.
They're coming.
The remaining slaves all lay on the floor waiting to be
captured. Sid is angry. The armed men come and survey the
area. They pick up all the guns and make the slaves get up
and walk back to the town.
70 INT. REVEREND'S QUARTERS 70
A badly beaten Sid, Bradley and Bill are in restraints on the
floor. Tracey is naked in front of them tied to a chair.
Tracey's face is covered in blood.
REVEREND
You see, we have been having
problems ever since you all have
come to this place...Break another
finger.
The guard behind Tracey, breaks her ring finger. Four of her
other fingers are broken.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
You people are like a cancer
festering with in this town. I
however intend with the grace of
God to cut it out. Much like how we
will cut out your lady friend's eye
out if you don't tell me who
started this.
The men say nothing. Sid is staring into Tracey's eyes and
can not take it.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
I will have this young man sodomize
this lady right here, then call his
men to continue to do this in
shifts all night until you all tell
me what I want to know.
SID
I did.
TRACEY
No. Sid...don't.
REVEREND
Ah...what was that?
SID
I did it you cock sucker.
REVEREND
Guard take her back.
The guard picks up Tracey and drags her to the door. As she
passes the Reverend he strokes her hair and holds on to it.
REVEREND (CONT'D)
Women are an interesting creation
don't you think. I could have done
anything I could have imagined to
you and you wouldn't have said
anything. I threaten what is left
of her virtue and you abandon your
convictions. This will free you but
hurt so much deeper.
The Reverend cuts Tracey's throat and lets her fall at Sid's
side. Her eyes connect with his as her life pours from her
body. Sid falls to her, slipping in her blood.
SID
Tracy don't die, I'm sorry don't
die. Oh god.
REVEREND
Take them to the square.
The guards come and rip Sid from Tracey before she dies. Bill
and Bradley are also dragged away.
71 EXT. TOWN SQUARE NIGHT 71
Bradley, Sid and Bill are tied to stakes in the middle of
town.
REVEREND
These men who stand before you have
broken our laws and put our town in
harms way. We will ask God's
forgiveness for their souls and
pray they receive his forgiveness.
BRADLEY
You can't let him do this!
BILL
They're gonna kill us.
BRADLEY
Stand up Fight him.
SID
Just stop. Stand strong.
BRADLEY
Don't let him do this!
BILL
I don't want to die guys. Don't let
them kill us.
They put sacks over their heads.
BILL (CONT'D)
I can't breathe! Please not like
this!
SID
Bill! Be strong!
Six men with axes walk up to the three men.
SID (CONT'D)
Don't make anymore noise. Die
proud.
BILL
I'll try man. I'm not ready man.
BRADLEY
I don't want to die. Not here.
SID
I'm sorry guys. I was wrong.
The ax men start swinging at them. The ax men swing multiple
times not trying to hit major organs. The boys are left
bleeding and hacked. Philip watches in anger. The prisoners
are herded back to the storage facility.
72 INT. HOSPITAL NIGHT 72
Sage comes rushing into the hospital to Thomas.
SAGE
I'm so sorry. I don't know what
happened?
Thomas says nothing.
SAGE (CONT'D)
Your friends are dead. The two men
and your brother for sure. I think
the women too.
Thomas backs up and almost falls.
THOMAS
Don't touch me.
SAGE
I'm sorry. I lost a brother. You
are going into the storage facility
tonight. With everything that
happened it's important you get in
there before the fear spreads and
we have no support. We lost a lot
of supporters in the riot today.
Trust me. We have to do it this
way. You saw what happens without a
plan. We have to stay with this
plan. Many people have died to save
you.
Two guards come to take Thomas.
GUARD
Don't try anything big boy. I'm not
in the mood for anymore shit.
73 INT. STORAGE FACILITY NIGHT 73
Thomas and the guards are walking into the space.
GUARD
You should have seen your brother
crying. He really didn't want to
die.
Thomas doesn't say a word.
GUARD 2
Ease up man.
GUARD
Fuck that if my brother shit on
himself I would want to know. Right
big guy?
The guard hit Thomas with a cattle prod.
GUARD (CONT'D)
Look at him shake.
GUARD 2
What are you doing man?
GUARD
Back off this fuck needs to know
who's boss.
When he turns his attention to Thomas, Thomas grabs the first
guard and pushes his head through cell bars ripping the flesh
from his face. When his head is through, Thomas drags his
body down to break his neck in the bars. He uses the cattle
prod to stun the second guard until he falls. The guard begs
for his life until screams are heard from down the hall. When
the other guards come to the scene Thomas is gone and the
guards are both dead.
GUARD 3
The Reverend is not going to be
happy.
GUARD 4
We better bring him another woman
tonight.
GUARD 3
Yeah.
74 EXT. REVEREND'S QUARTERS NIGHT 74
Thomas is outside the Reverend's house waiting for him but
sees the guards bringing Maria. Thomas is holding a machete
that is dripping with blood and tightening his grip on it.
75 INT. REVEREND'S QUARTERS 75
Maria is brought inside and chained to a wall. Next to Maria,
Penny is strapped to a wall naked.
MARIA
Penny. Penny wake up.
REVEREND
Why don't you take that one with
you. I am done with her. Stable her
or kill her.
76 EXT. REVEREND'S QUARTERS NIGHT 76
When the men leave the Reverend's quarters, Thomas, holding a
machete notices Penny. After they are out of sight he goes to
enter the Reverend's house but decides to go find Penny.
77 EXT. STABLE NIGHT 77
The guards are bringing Penny into the human stables. Thomas
has not seen this place. As one man fumbles for his keys.
Thomas walks up and chops the man holding Penny, sending them
both straight to the ground. The man who went to pick up his
keys is still staring right at Thomas. Thomas lowers the
machete onto his head. He goes over to see Penny and notices
she is alive. She wakes up and is scared by Thomas touching
her.
PENNY
Please no more please! Just kill
me.
Thomas puts his finger over his lips.
PENNY (CONT'D)
Thomas.
She sees the machete and the two dead men and realize she is
momentarily safe.
PENNY (CONT'D)
We have to help the women in there.
78 INT. STABLE NIGHT 78
Thomas goes in with Penny to see the women chained to the
center post. When the women hear them approaching they start
to scream and cry. Penny and Thomas unhook them.
PENNY
Please be quiet. We are trying to
help you.
79 EXT. TOWN SQUARE NIGHT 79
Moments later the town bell is heard ringing. Thomas has hung
both guards up a flag pole burning in the center of town. The
human stable is also on fire.
80 INT. REVEREND'S QUARTERS NIGHT 80
Guards come into the reverends quarters frantic.
GUARD
I'm sorry sir but you have to come
now.
REVEREND
What is the commotion?
GUARD
The stable is on fire and two
guards are burning on the flag
pole.
REVEREND
My god. Well let's go!
The chaos of Thomas allows Maria a moment. She escapes the
reverend's quarters and runs.
81 EXT. BUTCHER ROOM NIGHT 81
Maria hides in a meat locker of hanging prisoners.
PRISONER 1
Help me.
MARIA
Oh.
Maria is frozen with fear. Hands are coming from every
direction towards her. A set of feet are walking towards
Maria. Suddenly Maria feels a hook come from behind her and
she is hoisted in the air herself, one of the hanging dying.
Maria sees Gwen and Jacob hung up next to her. She screams as
the Butcher closes the freezer door.
82 INT. HOSPITAL NIGHT 82
Thomas walks in to find Sage angry.
SAGE
We worked! People have died. Why?
You risked us all! Oh my god.
She sees Penny.
SAGE (CONT'D)
Come honey, sit down. We have to
hurry. They will be here soon.
To check for you. We have to get
you to my house. Put this on.
Sage gives Penny a hospital gown. Thomas leaves.
PENNY
Where do they keep the guns?
SAGE
I guess we're not hiding.
PENNY
No.
83 INT. POLICE STATION NIGHT. 83
Sage runs into the station.
SAGE
Hurry the Reverend needs people at
the fuel reserves.
GUARD
Just calm down Sage. Is everything
OK?
SAGE
Yes he just thinks that we need to
protect them from the rebel.
GUARD
Johnny take the boys and check it
out. I'll take care of Sage.
The guards run. As the guard looks at Sage seductively Penny
hits the last guard in the head.
SAGE
OK let's get the ammo.
84 EXT. BUTCHER ROOM NIGHT 84
Thomas sets fire to the butcher shop.
GUARD
Fire! Fire!
The town bell starts to ring. People are clamoring around the
butcher shop. Buckets of water are carried by the guards.
REVEREND
Save whatever you can! Go send
people to protect the fuel
reserves. Hurry!
85 INT. STORAGE FACILITY NIGHT 85
The chaos allows Thomas and others to storm the guards
defending the storage facility to free some prisoners. Philip
is one of those people.
PHILIP
Take your freedom from these
people. Stand and fight.
PRISONER 1
Let's just go!
PHILIP
Anyone who tries to run, I will
kill. These people took our friends
and family and will do it again if
we don't stand our ground.
PRISONER 2
Why don't we just wait until after
the harvest. What do we have out
there anyway?
PHILIP
Nothing, this is why you have to
take this town! These people can
support this entire area if we stay
together. We can make this all
right.
The prisoners are afraid.
86 EXT. TOWN SQUARE NIGHT 86
The reverend is gathering the town guards.
REVEREND
Find this man and send him to his
maker!
The Reverend looks up and sees Thomas and an army of
prisoners walking towards the town. Sage and Penny are with
him holding shotguns. Penny cocks the gun and shoots a guard.
Thomas turns to her with a half smile.
PENNY
Dad had one upstate.
The prisoners and the town rebels are fighting for their
lives with sticks, stones and farming tools.
Philip is shooting every guard he can, screaming at the top
of his lungs with each shot.
As they get closer people start swinging the guns. Very soon
there is too much chaos for guns to be useful. Violence
erupts everywhere. Guards are dying everywhere. Thomas spots
the Reverend trying to run and goes after him.
REVEREND
Stay away from me.
Thomas catches the Reverend. He beats him unmercifully and
drags him to the storage facility.
87 INT. STORAGE FACILITY NIGHT 87
Thomas drags him in carrying the machete and a bucket of tar.
REVEREND
I am a man of God.
THOMAS
Do you see God here?
REVEREND
I can repent. I was misguided.
Please.
THOMAS
Please, please take my confessions.
REVEREND
Thank you. Thank you young man. Of
course I will my son.
THOMAS
The woman I swore to protect, I let
die. I failed my friends and family
and allowed my self to live... I
have killed in defense and in rage.
I have turned away from God and my
humanity and will never go back...
REVEREND
Keep going son.
THOMAS
...and I have killed a man of god.
Thomas cuts of his hands, then his legs, then drags the
broken man bleeding to the roof.
88 EXT. STORAGE FACILITY ROOF NIGHT 88
He lays the Reverend down on the roof then throws tar on his
stumps to stop the bleeding. Thomas drags him while his flesh
is sticking to the roof.
He ties a chain around him and hangs him off the roof. To
look over the town.
REVEREND
Help me! My God help me!
Thomas is walking down the stairs setting fire to the
building. The Reverend slowly roasts from the heat of the
flames. The Reverend is screaming in pain.
The town people come to see the Reverend alive but out of
reach. There is no way to save him before the flames take
him.
SAGE
Thomas...what have you done?
Thomas stand there and stares with no feeling. Penny tries
to touch his arm and he moves it. The town is burning much
like the night of the satellites.
SAGE (CONT'D)
You started it all over again.
THOMAS
This time do it right.
SAGE
I need your help.
THOMAS
You don't have it.
Thomas walks away.
DAY 17
89 EXT. TOWN SUARE DAY 89
Thomas has loaded a small wagon with supplies. Penny is with
him looking at the town. Sage is walking towards them.
PENNY
Do you think we should stay?
Thomas continues packing.
SAGE
Where are you two going to go?
PENNY
We are going to see if my parents
are OK. Thank you for your help.
SAGE
Thank you. I wish you would stay.
PENNY
I don't even think he is staying
with me.
SAGE
Is that true Thomas?
THOMAS
I don't know where I'll end up.
SAGE
You are welcomed back here.
Thomas grabs the wagon and begins to walk off.
PENNY
Good bye.
SAGE
Good bye. Take care of him. He's
somewhere in there.
PENNY
I'll try.
Penny catches up with Thomas and they continue down the
highway.
